This work investigated the role of fertilizer application rate on phosphorus (P) transport and loading to Lake Uluabat in Turkey. For this purpose ArcView Interface of Soil and Water Assessment Tool 2000 (AVSWAT) was used. Results showed that when the fertilizer amount applied to agricultural lands was doubled, the P load to Lake Uluabat increased by 32%. P transported to Lake Uluabat declined by about 6, 10 and 16%, when the fertilizer usage at the agricultural fields were decreased by 20, 30 and 50%, respectively. In general, a linear relationship was observed between the P load and the fertilizer application rates. The highest and lowest P losses were from the com and wheat productions, respectively. 70% more P was carried to Lake Uluabat from com, wheat, and tomato fields when the fertilizer amounts applied were doubled. When the fertilizer usage declined by 20, 30, and 50%, a total of 14, 21 and 35% less P were transported to the lake from the fields, respectively. For the threshold P loading, 56 of 78 subbasins were critical when the fertilizer usage was doubled. For 50% reduction in the fertilizer application rate, the number of critical subbasins decreased to 46. Nevertheless, this decrease was not sufficient to meet the goal P loading to Lake Uluabat.

Effect of material characteristics on the properties of blended cements containing high volumes of natural pozzolans
Turanlı, Lutfullah; Uzal, B; Bektas, F (Elsevier BV, 2004-12-01)
The effect of three different natural pozzolans from Turkish deposits on the properties of blended cements produced by intergrinding cement clinker with a high volume of natural pozzolan (55 wt.% of the cementitious material) was investigated. The particle size distribution of blended cements, setting time, heat of hydration, and compressive strength of blended cement mortars were determined. Experimental results showed that the hardness of the pozzolanic material strongly influenced the particle size distr...
Effects of operational parameters and ultrasonic pretreatment on supercritical CO2 extraction of diesel fuel from soil
Guvenc, A; Mehmetoglu, U; Mehmetoglu, T (Informa UK Limited, 2004-01-01)
Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) using CO2 was performed on soil material artificially contaminated with diesel fuel. Raising the temperature from 313 K to 343 K caused the recovery efficiency to increase from 52 to 76%. Pressure and CO2 flow rate were found to be less important. As expected, increasing extraction time resulted in higher recoveries. Ultrasonic pretreatment of the soil material was found to be very effective, possibly due to disrupting the strong interaction bonding between soil matrix a...
Effect of heating rate on thermal properties and kinetics of raw and cleaned coal samples
Özbas, Kazim Esber; Hicyilmaz, Cahit; Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Informa UK Limited, 2003-01-01)
In this article, thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) was used to determine the effect of heating rate on the thermal properties and kinetics of raw and cleaned coal samples from Soma, Tuncbilek, and Afsin Elbistan regions. TG/DTG experiments were carried out at 4 different heating rates (5, 10, 15, and 20degreesC/min). Generally, for all of the samples higher peak and burnout temperatures were measured with an increasing heating rate. Kinetic parameters of the samples were determined using an Arrhenius-type kinetic m...
Beneficiation of Himmetoglu oil shale by flotation as a solid fuel substitute. Part 2. Process optimization by a statistical approach
Altun, Naci Emre; Hwang, HY; Bagci, AS (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2006-01-01)
The effects of the important flotation parameters on the cleaning process of the Himmetoglu oil shale from Turkey were investigated. The individual and multiple interaction effects of conditioning time, flotation time, pulp density, particle size, and frother dosage were determined using statistical analysis and factorial design of experiments. The influence of these parameters on the cleaning performance were evaluated in terms of ash yield, calorific value, and combustible recovery of the concentrates. XR...
Effect of dispersed phase feed time on the droplet size of Pickering emulsions produced in a stirred tank
Donmez, Dila; Ayrancı Tansık, İnci (Wiley, 2020-06-01)
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of feed time of the oil phase on the average droplet size of Pickering emulsions produced in stirred tanks. Three types of impellers were tested: RT, up-pumping PBT (PBTU), and down-pumping PBT (PBTD). All the impellers were tested at two sizes, T/3 and T/2. All configurations were compared at constant tip speed, power per mass, and impeller Reynolds number. The droplet diameters were measured in Mastersizer (R) 3,000 (Malvern). The results showed that an ...
