A new method for determining the depth of cut using power shovel monitoring

Karpuz, Celal
The method based on the power shovel monitoring is described for determining the depth of cut and the value of power consumption depending on the rock strength and the dipper position in digging operation. The investigations into mining shoves operating at different open-pit mines of Turkish Coal Enterprises were carried out.

Performance assessment of cement grout borehole plugs in basalt
Akgün, Haluk (Elsevier BV, 1994-01-01)
Flow tests have been conducted on expansive cement grout plugs with diameters of 160 mm and 200 mm, and length-to-diameter ratios of one, in boreholes in basalt blocks and in steel pipes. Two types of flow tests have been performed: pseudo-constant head tests and transient pulse tests. Hydration temperatures of cement grout plugs have been monitored in steel pipes with inside diameters ranging from 110 mm to 200 mm. During flow tests, basalt blocks have fractured, presumably due to water injection pressure,...
An experimental study of vertical and inclined soil nails under footings as settlement reducers
Engin, Harun Kürşat; Ergun, Mehmet Ufuk; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
Vertical and inclined soil nails under footings as settlement ا reducing elements is investigated using a physical 1g model in the laboratory. Nails are not connected to footing, they are not so long and vertical settlement of nails is very large compared to usual limits encountered for piles or micropiles. Following the settlement of footing, they share the load together with the footing. The skin friction is mostly mobilized and end-bearing failure occurs continuously during the settlement. The system of ...
A New Isotropic Specimen Preparation Method from Slurry for both Saturated and Unsaturated Triaxial Testing of a Low-Plasticity Silt
Ahmadi-Naghadeh, Reza; Toker, Nabi Kartal (ASTM International, 2019-07-01)
A new procedure for the preparation of low-plasticity silt specimens that are isotropically reconstituted from slurry is developed for use in both saturated and unsaturated soil testing. Spatial variations of the water content and grain size distribution were examined to confirm the uniformity of the specimens (regarding void radio and segregation). The new preparation method results in a homogeneous specimen, which has a simple stress history. The repeatability of the proposed method in preparing identical...
Comparison of suction and oedometer methods for the measurement of swell pressure
Cokca, E (Geological Society of London, 2000-05-01)
In this paper, a thermocouple psychrometric technique is used to measure soil suction and assess the reliability of a swell pressure prediction method. Kaolinite-bentonite clay mixtures were prepared to obtain expansive soils with a wide range of plasticities. Suction measurements using thermocouple psychrometers and constant volume swell tests in oedometers were made on statically compacted :specimens. Soil suction-water content relationships were evaluated. The results indicate a linear relationship betwe...
A probabilistic model for the assessment of uncertainties in the shear strength of rock discontinuities
DUZGUN, HSB; Yücemen, Mehmet Semih; Karpuz, Celal (Elsevier BV, 2002-09-01)
Discontinuity shear strength plays a critical role in many problems encountered in rock engineering, especially in the design of rock slopes. Since its precise estimation is generally not possible, it is crucial that the errors and uncertainties associated with its estimate be quantified and reflected in the design procedure. In this study, the uncertainties underlying discontinuity shear strength are thoroughly examined and an uncertainty analysis model is developed for the estimation of in situ discontinu...
