Shear strength-suction relationship of compacted Ankara clay

2010-08-01
The relationship between shear strength and soil suction of compacted Ankara clay was investigated at different moisture contents. Soil samples were tested at optimum moisture content (w = 20.8%), drier than optimum (w = 14.8%, 16.8%, 18.8%) and wetter than optimum (w = 22.8%, 24.8%, 26.8%). Direct shear tests were performed. Soil suctions were measured by the filter paper method after direct shear tests. Direct shear tests and soil suction measurements were also performed on soaked samples. The soil suction versus moisture content curve was developed. The shear strength variation with respect to soil suction was found for all normal stresses. The soil suction versus moisture content curves bear a close relationship to the unsaturated shear strength of the soil. An increase in soil suction increases the shear strength.

GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RECENT SEDIMENTS FROM THE SEA OF MARMARA
BODUR, MN; ERGIN, M (Elsevier BV, 1994-07-01)
Six box-cores, one boomerang core and one hundred sixty-six surface sediment samples recovered in the Sea of Marmara were analyzed in an attempt to establish the main controls on distribution and origin of trace metals within the oxic to suboxic basin of this sea.
Geochemistry of Fluid Inclusions in Travertines From Western and Northern Turkey: Inferences on the Role of Active Faults in Fluids Circulation

The understanding of the relationship between the geochemistry of fluids circulating during travertine deposition and the presence of active faults is crucial for evaluating the seismogenetic potential of an area. Here we investigate travertines from Pamukkale and Resadiye (Turkey), sited in seismic regions and next to thermal springs. These travertines formed similar to 24,500-50,000 (Pamukkale) and similar to 240-14,600 years (Resadiye) BP. We characterize fluid inclusions (FIs) and studied concentration ...
Shear Strength Mobilized in Undrained Failure of Soft Clay and Silt Deposits
Mesri, Gholamreza; Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan (2007-02-18)
In the early days of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, two important assumptions were made as a part of the limiting equilibrium stability analysis of undrained failure of soft clay and silt deposits. It was assumed that undrained shear strength is independent of the laboratory or in situ testing methods used to determine it, and that the shear strength mobilized in a full-scale undrained failure in the field is equal to the undrained shear strength measured by a laboratory or in situ test. However...
Strength of various sands in triaxial and cyclic direct shear tests
ÇABALAR, ALİ FIRAT; Dulundu, Kemal; Tuncay, Kağan (Elsevier BV, 2013-04-01)
This paper presents the result of an extensive series of experimental investigation carried out in triaxial and cyclic direct shear tests on sands having various properties, which were obtained from different locations in Turkey and in Northern Cyprus. In order to investigate the link between strength and physical properties (i.e., shape) of the sand particles, three series of triaxial tests (Consolidated-Drained, CD; Consolidated-Undrained, CU; and Unconsolidated-Undrained, UU) for each were performed unde...

Two epithermal gold deposits (Kartaldag and Madendag) located in NW Turkey have been characterized through the detailed examinations involving geologic, mineralogical, fluid inclusion, stable isotope, whole-rock geochemistry, and geochronology data.
