Effect of feed gas composition on the separation of CO2/CH4 mixtures by PES-SAPO 34-HMA mixed matrix membranes

2012-11-01
The performance of zeolite and low molecular weight additive incorporated polyethersulfone (PES) membranes on the separation of CO2/CH4 mixtures at 35 degrees C was investigated. Four types of membranes, pure PES, PES/ 2-hydroxy 5-methyl aniline (HMA), PES/SAPO-34 and PES/SAPO-34/HMA, were prepared by solvent evaporation method. The CO2 concentration in the feed was varied between 5 and 70% by volume. PES/SAPO-34 membranes had a total permeability coefficient of 3 Barrer for an equimolar mixture, which was the highest permeability among all membranes. The highest separation factor, which was approximately 40 for CO2 over CH4, was obtained from PES/SAPO-34/HMA(4%) membrane. The addition of HMA considerably influenced the separation performance of PES/SAPO-34 membrane. The permeabilities increased with increasing concentration of CO2 in the feed whereas the separation factors of membranes were independent of feed composition, which introduces a major advantage from industrial point of view since the membranes can be used with the same performance in the separation of CO2/CH4 mixtures regardless of mixture composition.

The effect of low molecular weight additive (LMWA) loading on the gas permeation properties of pure PES and PES/SAPO-34 membranes was investigated. 2-hydroxy 5-methyl aniline (HMA) was selected as LMWA. Membranes were prepared by solvent-evaporation method and annealed above the glass transition temperature (T-g) of PES. They were characterized by single gas permeability measurements of H-2, CO2, and CH4 as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The H-2/CH4 ...

Mixed matrix composite membranes of a conducting polymer, polypyrrole (PPy), and an insulating polymer, polybisphenol-A-carbonate (PC) were prepared by a combined in-situ polymerization and solvent evaporation. Mixed matrix composite membranes were synthesized to combine the good gas transport properties of conductive polymer, PPy, with good mechanical properties of PC.

Ternary component mixed matrix membrane was prepared from PES, SAPO-34 and 2-hydroxy 5-methyl aniline on a macroporous alumina disk by the solvent evaporation method in order to investigate the effect of existence of an inorganic support. The membrane and its pure PES/Alumina counterpart were characterized by single gas permeability measurements of H-2, CH4, C2H6 and C3H8. The corresponding H-2/CH4 selectivities of membranes were 71.3 and 41. The membranes were also used to separate equimolar mixtures of H-...
Effect of solvent choice on cellulose acetate membrane fabrication by phase inversion and deacetylation by alkaline hydrolysis
Tekin, Fatma Seden; Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep; Department of Chemical Engineering (2022-8)
In this study, the effect of solvent choice on cellulose acetate (CA) membrane morphology and performance was investigated to relate this to the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase inversion. Three different solvent systems were used, which are dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), the mixture of DMSO: acetone (DA) and DMSO: acetic acid (DHAc) in the ratio of 1:1. Water was used as non-solvent. Acetone and acetic acid were chosen due to their similar solvent quality for cellulose acetate based on Hansen solubility pa...
Effect of calcium oxide addition on carbothermic formation of hexagonal boron nitride

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) formation by carbothermic reduction of B2O3 under nitrogen atmosphere at 1500°C and effect of CaO addition into the initial B2O3 – active C mixture were investigated during this study. Reaction products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quantitative chemical analysis. Main aim of this study was to investigate the presence of a second reaction mechanism that catalytically affects h-BN formation during CaO or CaCO3 addition in...
