Mega projects are large-scaled and long-term investments. Therefore, they have significant impacts on national economy in micro and macro scale, environment and society in comparison to the small and medium-sized construction projects. Time, cost and quality are the most common criteria that are utilized to evaluate the performance of the construction projects, yet those criteria become insufficient to evaluate the mega construction projects’ success. These projects have a long life-cycle from the planning stage to the demolition phase of the project and significant impacts on environmental and social consequences. For this reason, three pillars of sustainable construction objectives which are economic, environmental and social sustainability should be integrated into the mega construction projects, and it should be aimed to obtained a sustainable outcome for the whole life-cycle of the mega construction projects with the integration of those objectives. On the other hand, there are various risk factors that threaten the achievement of the sustainable construction objectives. The present study proposes a risk assessment method for sustainable construction of megaprojects (RAMSCOM). For this purpose, sustainable construction objectives and risk factors are identified through the literature review. Then, the relationships among sustainable construction objectives and risk factors are presented in a conceptual framework. Subsequently, relationships among objectives and risk factors are quantified in order to analyze the threats for the sustainable construction objectives and enhance decision making process in advance. Finally, the usability of the proposed model is tested on a real construction megaproject and findings regarding the megaproject are discussed.

A Decision Support System for Project Portfolio Management in Construction Companies
Bilgin, Gozde; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; ÖZORHON ORAKÇAL, BELİZ (2022-11-01)
Project portfolio management requires a systematic process that comprises assessment of portfolio risk and expected profitability, as well as strategic fit of individual projects with company objectives. After a needs analysis based on literature findings and surveys with experts, in this study, a process model and a tool, COPPMAN (COnstruction Project Portfolio MANagement), were developed to support project portfolio decisions in construction companies. COPPMAN was developed in collaboration with construct...
Data Management in Astrobiology: Challenges and Opportunities for an Interdisciplinary Community
Aydınoğlu, Arsev Umur; Malone, Jim (2014-06-01)
Data management and sharing are growing concerns for scientists and funding organizations throughout the world. Funding organizations are implementing requirements for data management plans, while scientists are establishing new infrastructures for data sharing. One of the difficulties is sharing data among a diverse set of research disciplines. Astrobiology is a unique community of researchers, containing over 110 different disciplines. The current study reports the results of a survey of data management p...
A decision support system for value for money analysis of minimum revenue guaranteed road projects
Tekin, Zeki Emre; Sönmez, Rifat; Department of Civil Engineering (2018)
Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects have ability to fund themselves when investments generate sufficient revenue. However, commercial revenues except collected tolls are limited in road projects. On the other hand, demand uncertainty creates concerns regarding toll revenues and governments generally provide Minimum Revenue Guarantee (MRG) to make road PPPs feasible and attractive for private sector. If optimum level of MRG are not assessed during preparation stage and required funds are not allocated ...
Use of Geospatial Queries for Optimum Drilling and Blasting Practices in Surface Mining
Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa (2018-11-22)
Increasing demand of the modern society for energy and raw material strengthens the role of mining in sustainable development. The basic production cycle of surface mining is initiated by drilling and blasting the material that will be loaded, hauled, and dumped by various mobile equipment. Performance measurement and analysis of all these production stages by the utilization of available technology is of crucial importance for continuous improvement of modern mine operations. Today, most of the mobile equi...
Metaheuristic algorithms based automated evaluation method for public investment projects
Yılmaz, Tüluğ Figen; Karagöz, Pınar; Department of Computer Engineering (2014)
The public investment projects are essential to improve the state economy prosperously and to improve life of people. In spite of high need for public investment projects, resources are limited. So, there has been increased requirement on the accountability and efficiency of the public investment projects. To overcome these issues, project performance evaluation systems are needed. Scientific and reasonable performance measurement can be utilized in these systems to evaluate public investment projects. A se...
