The photocatalytic antimicrobial activity over TiO2, SnO2 and their Pd doped thin film samples were determined against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aereus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Aspergilus niger spores. Higher antimicrobial activity was observed with TiO2 than SnO2 thin films and, Pd addition contributes to an increase in the activity of both semiconductor oxides. The highest microbial inactivation was achieved with 1% PdO/TiO2 against E. coli with a 98% decrease in survival after 2 h illumination. SnO2 was found to show lower photocatalytic efficiency against E. coli with a 56% decrease in survival after 2 It illumination and a 68% decrease in survival of E. coli after palladium addition. E. coli showed the least and S. cerevisiae showed the highest resistance against photocatalytic inactivation and, A. niger spores could not be inactivated up to 8 h illumination over all the surfaces. The antimicrobial efficiencies against different microorganisms and fungal spores were found to decrease in the following order: E. coli > S. aereus > S. cerevisiae > A. niger spores for which, complexity and strength of the cell walls increased in the same order.

Photocatalytic antibacterial activity of TiO2-SiO2 thin films: The effect of composition on cell adhesion and antibacterial activity
ERDURAL, Beril; Bolukbasi, UFUK; Karakaş, Gürkan (Elsevier BV, 2014-06-01)
Colloidal solutions of SiO2-TiO2 mixed oxides having different SiO2 contents were synthesized by sol-gel technique and thin films were deposited over glass slides by using dip coating technique. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, AFM and methylene blue adsorption methods. The surface free energy of thin films was measured by sessile drop method by using diiodomethane, glycerol and water as probe liquids. The photocatalytic antibacterial activity of the samples was determined for Escherichia coli XL...
Synthesis of alpha-Fe2O3/TiO2 heterogeneous composites by the sol-gel process and their photocatalytic activity
Bouziani, Asmae; PARK, JONGEE; Öztürk, Abdullah (Elsevier BV, 2020-09-01)
alpha-Fe2O3/TiO2 heterogeneous composites were synthesized by the sol-gel process to increase the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. The structural, morphological, and optical characteristics of the composites were determined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Results revealed that the incorporation of alpha-Fe2O3 to TiO2 widened the visible light absorption ability of TiO2. It was realized that the calcination temperature plays a crucial role in m...
Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles: biomolecule-nanoparticle organizations targeting antimicrobial activity
Roy, Anupam; Bulut, Onur; Some, Sudip; Mandal, Amit Kumar; Yilmaz, M. Deniz (Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), 2019-01-23)
Since discovery of the first antibiotic drug, penicillin, in 1928, a variety of antibiotic and antimicrobial agents have been developed and used for both human therapy and industrial applications. However, excess and uncontrolled use of antibiotic agents has caused a significant growth in the number of drug resistant pathogens. Novel therapeutic approaches replacing the inefficient antibiotics are in high demand to overcome increasing microbial multidrug resistance. In the recent years, ongoing research has...
A benzimidazole-based turn-off fluorescent sensor for selective detection of mercury (II)
ERGÜN, EMİNE GÜL CANSU; Ertaş, Gülay; Eroglu, Deniz (Elsevier BV, 2020-05-01)
In this study, potential fluorescent sensing ability of a donor-acceptor-donor type conjugated molecule over various metal ions (Ni(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Fe(II), Fe(III), As(III), Se(IV), Hg(I) and Hg(II)) was investigated. The sensor basically includes benzimidazole and 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene as the acceptor and donor units, respectively. Solution of the sensor in tetrahydrofuran exhibits an emission with having a maximum at 632 nm. Since having insolubility of some ions in tetrahydrofu...
Cytochrome P4501A and associated mixed-function oxidase induction in fish as a biomarker for toxic carcinogenic pollutants in the aquatic environment
Arinc, E; Sen, A; Bozcaarmutlu, A (Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2000-06-01)
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins, dibenzofurans, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) present in polluted environment induce cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) isozyme in fish, which in turn results in a marked increased production of carcinogenic metabolites from PAHs. The induction of hepatic CYP1A in fish by certain classes of chemicals has been suggested as an early warning system, a "most sensitive biological response" for assessing environmental contamination conditions. This has implications f...
