Thermal Barrier Coatings have been widely used in modern turbine engines to protect the nickel based metal substrate from the high temperature service conditions, 1600-1800 K. In this study, failure mechanisms of typical Air Plasma Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC) used in after-burner structures composed of three major layers: Inconel 718 substrate, NiCrAlY based metallic bond coat (BC) and Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) based ceramic top coat (TC) are investigated. Investigation of the cracking mechanism of TBC in terms of design and performance is very important because the behavior of TBCs on ductile metallic substrates is brittle. To this end, four-point bending experiments reported in [1] are analyzed by using the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) and the Cohesive Zone Method (CZM). All the analyses are conducted with the commercial finite element software ABAQUS. Three different models with varying TC and BC thicknesses are studied. It is observed that multiple vertical cracks are initiated in the TC. Cracks initiate at the top of YSZ and propagate through the whole TC until they reach the interface between the TC and the BC. Then, delaminations at the interface between the TC and the BC start. It is observed that the average spacing of cracks in TC increases with the increasing thickness of the TC and the delamination becomes prominent with the increasing TC thickness. Numerical results are found to be consistent with the experimental results.

Experimental investigation of the failure of air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings
Kütükoğlu, Başar; Çöker, Demirkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
In this thesis, an experimental method is developed to determine the interfacial fracture toughness of air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings. The thesis is composed of three major parts. In the first part, nanoindentation is used to measure the elastic modulus and hardness of the APS TBC specimens composed of three major layers: Inconel 718 substrate, NiCrAlY based metallic bond coat (BC) and YSZ based ceramic top coat (TC). Microscopy, XRD and EDS are used for metallurgical characterization. In the s...
Formation and characterization of infrared absorbing copper oxide surfaces
Arslan, Burcu; Erdogan, Metehan; Karakaya, İshak (2017-04-30)
Copper oxide formation has been investigated to combine the advantages of producing different size and shapes of coatings that possess good light absorbing properties. An aqueous blackening solution was investigated and optimum composition was found as 2.5 M NaOH and 0.225 M NaClO to form velvet copper oxide films. A two-step oxidation mechanism was proposed for the blackening process by carefully examining the experimental results. Formation of Cu2O was observed until the entire copper surface was covered ...
Epoxy-based composites and coatings: improvement of multifunctional properties
Çaldıklıoğlu, Almira; Bayram, Göknur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2019)
The purposes of this study are to improve mechanical properties, thermal stability, resistance to flammability, electrical conductivity and hydrophobicity of epoxy (E) by incorporation of expanded graphite (EG) and titanium dioxide (T) particles. In this study, sonication with the use of solvent method was primarily determined for the epoxy-based binary composite and coating preparation. By this method, the epoxy composites and coatings were produced by changing EG concentration as 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.7...
