Masonry exists from very past centuries around the world which is used not only for sheltering, most of historical architectural masterpieces are masonry structures. Masonry offers advantages in many areas such as easy supply of materials, easy to construct and thermal durability of materials. However, the analysis of masonry buildings is not a easy task. Various reasons such as the diversity of materials used and the lack of characteristic properties of these materials, lack of design regulations and the fact that the analysis methods used for today's reinforced concrete and steel structures are not suitable for masonry buildings complicate the analysis of masonry buildings. Because these structures are non-engineered structures, it is difficult and time-consuming to apply complex analysis methods for masonry buildings. Limit analysis is a very useful and fast method for non-engineered buildings such as masonry buildings. In this study, it is provided to obtain lateral load capacity by using lower-bound limit analysis method. Starting from a wall with no opening with the lower bound theorem based on the provision of static equilibrium and yield conditions, the walls with various openings were calculated and the maximum lateral load they were able to take was found. In this way, the openings had an effect on the lateral load capacity of the wall and a comparison was made. In addition, various properties of the wall have been changed to support the assumptions about the masonry wall. Matlab2017b program was applied for the application of the lower-bound theorem.

Improved methodology for identification of Goktepe white marble and the understanding of its use: A comparison with Carrara marble
Wielgosz-Rondolino, Dagmara; Antonelli, Fabrizio; Bojanowski, Maciej J.; Gladki, Marcin; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Lazzarini, Lorenzo (2020-01-01)
The provenance of marbles used for ancient statuary and architecture is of utmost importance for archaeologists, art historians and archaeometrists. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive characterisation of the white marble exploited in antiquity in Goktepe (Mugla Province, Turkey) to increase the reliability for identifying this marble in ancient artefacts. A campaign of interdisciplinary archaeological and geological fieldwork undertaken by the Marmora Asiatica project is based on a multi-me...
An investigation of strengthening of historical masonry constructions by steel skeleton
Küçükdoğan, Bilge; Akkar, Sinan; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2007)
Historical masonry structures are important cultural assets which reveal the social, archaeological, aesthetic, economical, political, architectural and technical features of their times. Within the course of the time, the structures have been exposed to the destructive effects of the nature and the man. Some has been able to survive somehow and others were totally ruined. Most of the remained structures are in vulnerable condition to upcoming effects and for the continuity of their presence, structural str...
Analysis on the mechanical properties of historical brick masonry after machinery demolition
Ucer, Deniz; Ulybin, Aleksey; Zubkov, Sergey; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira (2018-02-10)
The demolition process of a historical brick masonry building in St. Petersburg, Russia was observed as a case study and research was conducted on the possibility of reusing the resultant debris, which was composed of high quality brick masonry, as new building material. Therefore, samples from the demolition debris, i.e. brick, mortar and wall pieces were collected and tested for their mechanical properties, according to Russian standards, when available, and according to International Standards for the re...

A RESEARCH ON THE PERCEPTION OF ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS ABOUT STRAW-BALE BUILDINGS
Erbil, Yasemin; Yücel, Çigdem; Kizilkusak, R.Tugba (European Center of Sustainable Development, 2018-1-1)
Although straw-bale construction has been used for thousands of years, currently doesn't attract considerable attention by professional architects and students. The reason behind this is assumed to be the prejudices and lack of knowledge about straw-bale buildings. In the scope of this research understanding candidate architects point of view on the preference criterias that are effective about choice of straw-bale construction is aimed. For this purpose, among 214 students of private university (in Turkey)...
