The project is at the core of the construction business. Project management can be used as a tool to maximize the success of projects and ultimately the success of construction companies. It is therefore worthwhile to explore the factors that can enhance project management competencies. In this study, it was hypothesized that "project management competencies" are influenced by "corporate strengths/weaknesses". "Corporate strengths/weaknesses" was defined as a second-ordered construct composed of three latent variables including the company's resources and capabilities, its strategic decisions, and the strength of its relationships with other parties. The data obtained from a questionnaire survey administered to 73 contractors were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results of the study verified the hypothesis suggested. Using fuzzy risk assessment to rate cost overrun risk in international construction projects
Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (Elsevier BV, 2007-07-01)
Determination of an appropriate mark-up while bidding for international construction projects is a critical decision. Level of mark-up is a function of risks associated with a project. Construction companies may benefit from a tool that helps them to assess the level of risk so that they can determine an appropriate mark-up. The aim of this paper is to propose a fuzzy risk assessment methodology for international construction projects and develop a tool to implement the proposed methodology. The proposed me...
Quantification of Delay Factors Using the Relative Importance Index Method for Construction Projects in Turkey
Gunduz, Murat; Nielsen, Yasemin; Ozdemir, Mustafa (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2013-04-01)
Construction delays are common in construction industry and create major concerns for project performance. Construction delays are caused by many factors. The aim of this paper is to identify delay factors on construction projects and analyze these factors with the relative importance index method. For this purpose, 83 different delay factors were identified, categorized into nine major groups, and visualized by the Ishikawa (fishbone) diagram through detailed literature review and interviews with experts f...
A modified heuristic procedure for materials management in project networks
Erbasi, A; Sepil, C (1999-06-01)
A heuristic procedure for determining the tradeoff between expediting the ordering of materials and delaying the project is presented. The heuristic procedure is a modification of the procedure taken from the literature. With the use of an illustrative example, it has been shown that the modified procedure provides schedules with lower total cost values. Experimental results performed on randomly generated problems reveal that the modification can bring a decrease in total cost values as much as 52%.
Preventing and correcting quality issues in construction with intelligent knowledge management
Saygılı, Murathan; Tokdemir, Onur Behzat; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-6-21)
The construction industry relies on the successful execution of what is planned. Project cost, schedule, and other performance criteria are set and written on a contract, by which all parties are obligated to abide. Similarly, corporate processes are defined by the procedures of companies. However, projects and corporate processes suffer from various obstacles in practice, some of which arise from certain events that might seem insignificant, causing significant deviations from the plan. These obstacles are...
Cost estimation of housing projects by functional areas
Öncül, Mustafa; Arıkan, Metin S.; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
Good conceptual cost estimates is one of the most important factors affecting the project success. Investment decisions taken and budget preparations are performed from the results of the conceptual estimates. Also, the most difficult cost estimation is the early estimates where there is very limited information. This thesis provides a model for the cost estimation of the housing projects at the conceptual stage, considering not only the total area of the construction, but also considering fractional areas,...
