Age of Information is a measure of the freshness of status updates in applications where the timeliness of information is crucial. We study an energy harvesting communication system in which status updates are sent through a link with negligible delay. We consider the average of a cost which is a non-decreasing function of the status age and investigate the optimal policy particularly for the scenario where the energy harvesting has an energy buffer with unit capacity.

Scheduling Status Updates to Minimize Age of Information with an Energy Harvesting Sensor
Bacınoğlu, Baran Tan; Uysal, Elif (2017-06-30)
Age of Information is a measure of the freshness of status updates in monitoring applications and update-based systems. We study a real-time sensing scenario with a sensor which is restricted by time-varying energy constraints and battery limitations. The sensor sends updates over a packet erasure channel with no feedback. The problem of finding an age-optimal threshold policy, with the transmission threshold being a function of the energy state and the estimated current age, is formulated. The average age ...
Measuring age of information on real-life connections
Beytur, Hasan Burhan; Baghaee, Sajjad; Uysal, Elif (2019-04-01)
Age of Information (AoI) is a relatively new metric to measure freshness of networked application such as real-time monitoring of status updates or control. The AoI metric is discussed in the literature mainly in a theoretical way. In this work, we want to point out the issues related to the measuring AoI-related values, such as synchronization and calculation of the values. We discussed the effect of synchronization error in the measurement and a solution for calculating an estimate of average AoI without ...
Reinforcement Learning Based Adaptive Blocklength and MCS Selection for Minimization of Age Violation Probability
Özkaya, Ayşenur; Ceran Arslan, Elif Tuğçe; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2022-1)
As a measure of data freshness, Age of Information (AoI) is an important semantic performance metric in systems where small status update packets need to be delivered to a monitor in a timely manner. This study aims to minimize the age violation probability (AVP), which is defined as the probability that instantaneous age exceeds a certain threshold. The AVP can be considered as one of the key performance indicators in emerging 5G and beyond technologies such as massive machine-to-machine communications (mM...
New heuristics for performance improvement of ilp-based concept discovery systems
Doğan, Abdullah; Karagöz, Pınar; Mutlu, Alev; Department of Computer Engineering (2015)
A large amount of the valuable data in daily life is stored in relational databases. The accumulation of so much information motivates the need for extracting valuable patterns in relational databases. Background knowledge and a set of target examples that are stored in multiple tables are used to produce hypothesis for ILP-based concept discovery systems. Multiple arguments on these multiple tables end up large search spaces while building the hypothesis that arise computational efficiency problems. In thi...
TIMELY COMMUNICATION FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENCY, DATA FRESHNESS AND TRACKING
Bacınoğlu, Baran Tan; Uysal, Elif; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2021-9-1)
This thesis considers data transmission scenarios where timeliness of information transmission, or adapting to intermittently available resources is important. The first part of the thesis focuses on energy harvesting communication systems. For such systems, energy efficient scheduling algorithms that achieve certain throughput maximization and data freshness objectives are developed. The second part of the thesis considers data transmission for the purpose of tracking unstable sources through noisy channels. ...
