This paper presents a novel computational electromagnetics (CEM) technique, which hybridizes the periodic finite element method (FEM) with the method of moments (MoM), for efficient numerical modeling of electromagnetic scattering from metasurfaces consisting of truncated periodic or locally varying quasi-periodic array of structures. Based on the quasi-periodic nature of metasurfaces, the periodic FEM is employed to generate high-level macro basis functions (MBFs). Following that, a reduced MoM matrix is formed by using the MBFs with unknown coefficients belonging to each cell of the periodic array. The proposed hybrid method reduces the computational load significantly when compared with conventional numerical methods, especially for electrically large truncated metasurfaces involving arbitrarily inhomogeneous unit cells. Various numerical results are presented, and the accuracy and performance of the proposed method are tested against commercial codes, as well as an in-house FEM code.

A finite field framework for modeling, analysis and control of finite state automata
Reger, Johann; Schmidt, Klaus Verner (Informa UK Limited, 2004-09-01)
In this paper, we address the modeling, analysis and control of finite state automata, which represent a standard class of discrete event systems. As opposed to graph theoretical methods, we consider an algebraic framework that resides on the finite field F-2 which is defined on a set of two elements with the operations addition and multiplication, both carried out modulo 2. The key characteristic of the model is its functional completeness in the sense that it is capable of describing most of the finite st...
Efficient hybrid discrete Fourier transform-moment method for fast analysis of large rectangular arrays
Chou, HT; Ho, HK; Pathak, PH; Nepa, P; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem (Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), 2002-02-01)
A novel approach combining the moment method (MoM) and the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is developed for the fast analysis of electromagnetic (EM) radiation/scattering from electrically large, finite, planar rectangular arrays. In particular, the unknown array distribution to be solved is represented in terms of the DFT within the MoM for a given array excitation. The proposed DFT-MoM approach for large arrays has the advantage that it can overcome the inefficiency of the conventional MoM approach by dr...
A Novel Numerical Technique for Analyzing Metasurfaces
ÖZGÜN, ÖZLEM; Mittra, Raj; Kuzuoğlu, Mustafa (2019-12-31)
This work presents a novel technique for efficient numerical modeling of electromagnetic scattering from metasurfaces comprising of truncated periodic or locally-varying quasi-periodic surfaces. The proposed technique hybridizes the periodic Finite Element Method (FEM) with the Method of Moments (MoM) to develop an algorithm far more efficient than conventional numerical methods for electromagnetic scattering from arbitrary objects. The key feature of the proposed algorithm is that it takes advantage of the...
An improved transformation for universal serendipity elements
Utku, M (1999-10-01)
This paper describes the formulation of shape functions and their derivatives for universal serendipity elements in finite element analysis, which allows for flexibility in locating edge nodes. Universal serendipity elements are defined as isoparametric elements having linear, quadratic and cubic node configurations at their edges in an arbitrary manner. Edge nodes positioned at the same relative distance from corner nodes in both master element and physical element provide improved accuracy over nodes posi...
Effects of using different boundary conditions and computational domain dimensions on modeling and simulations of periodic metamaterial arrays in microwave frequencies
Turkmen, Oznur; EKMEKÇİ, Evren; Sayan, Gönül (Wiley, 2013-07-01)
This article aims to demonstrate the effects of using different boundary conditions and different computational volume dimensions in numerical simulations of periodic metamaterial arrays. A double band metamaterial unit cell design will be utilized to show that use of different boundary conditions may result in simulation of dissimilar periodic array topologies with completely different electromagnetic responses. It will also be shown that dimensions of the computational volume may strongly affect the overa...
