Design recommendations for steel plate shear wall (SPSW) systems have recently been introduced into seismic provisions for steel buildings. Response modification (R), overstrength (Omega(o)), and displacement amplification (C-d) factors for SPSW systems presented in design codes were based on professional experience and judgment. A numerical study has been undertaken to evaluate these factors for SPSW systems. Forty-four unstiffened SPSW possessing different geometrical characteristics were designed based on the recommendations given in the AISC Seismic Provisions. Bay width, number of stories, story mass, and steel plate thickness were considered as the prime variables that influence the response. Twenty records were selected to include the variability in ground motion characteristics. In order to provide a detailed analysis of the post-buckling response, three-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted for the 44 structures subjected to the selected suite of earthquake records. For each structure and earthquake record, two analyses were conducted in which the first includes geometrical nonlinearities and the other includes both geometrical and material nonlinearities, resulting in a total of 1760 time history analyses. In this paper, the details of the design and analysis methodology are given. Based on the analysis results, response modification (R), overstrength (Omega(o)), and displacement amplification (C-d) factors for SPSW systems are evaluated. A numerical study on response factors for steel wall-frame systems
Arslan, Hakan; Topkaya, Cem (Wiley, 2010-11-01)
A numerical investigation was undertaken to evaluate the response of dual structural systems that consisting of steel plate shear walls and moment-resisting frames. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the influence of elastic base shear distribution between the wall and the frame on the global system response. A total of 10 walls and 30 wall frame systems, ranging from 3 to 15 stories, were selected for numerical assessment. These systems represent cases in which the elastic base shear res...
An improvement to linear-elastic procedures for seismic performance assessment
Gunay, Mehmet Selim; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2010-07-10)
An improved linear-elastic analysis procedure is developed in this paper as a simple approximate method for displacement-based seismic assessment of the existing buildings. The procedure is mainly based on reducing the stiffness of structural members that are expected to respond in the inelastic range in a single global iteration step. Modal spectral displacement demands are determined from the equal displacement rule. Response predictions obtained from the proposed procedure are evaluated comparatively by ...
The role of overstrength on the seismic performance of asymmetric-plan structures
Kaatsız, Kaan; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2019-04-10)
Uneven distribution of seismic demand in asymmetric-plan structures is a critical concern in earthquake-resistant design. Contemporary seismic design strategies that are based on linear elastic response, single load reduction factor, and uniform ductility demand throughout an asymmetric system generally lead to unsatisfactory performance in terms of realized ductilities and nonuniform damage distribution due to strong torsional coupling associated with asymmetric-plan systems. In many cases, actual nonlinea...
AN ENERGY APPROACH TO SLIDING OF SINGLE-SPAN SIMPLY SUPPORTED SLAB-ON-GIRDER STEEL HIGHWAY BRIDGES WITH DAMAGED BEARINGS
Dicleli, Murat (Wiley, 1995-03-01)
This paper investigates the non-linear inelastic seismic response of existing single-span simply supported bridges having bearings which can remain stable and slide after their anchor bolts are ruptured. A simplified equivalent model is developed for the inelastic analysis of these single-span simply supported bridges. Non-linear inelastic time-history analyses are conducted for various acceleration inputs. It is found that narrower bridges with longer spans may have considerable sliding displacements and f...
