In this paper, we present an ontology-based information extraction and retrieval system and its application in the soccer domain. In general, we deal with three issues in semantic search, namely, usability, scalability and retrieval performance. We propose a keyword-based semantic retrieval approach. The performance of the system is improved considerably using domain-specific information extraction, inferencing and rules. Scalability is achieved by adapting a semantic indexing approach and representing the whole world as small independent models. The system is implemented using the state-of-the-art technologies in Semantic Web and its performance is evaluated against traditional systems as well as the query expansion methods. Furthermore, a detailed evaluation is provided to observe the performance gain due to domain-specific information extraction and inferencing. Finally, we show how we use semantic indexing to solve simple structural ambiguities. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.

An ontology-based retrieval system using semantic indexing

Achieving Semantic Interoperability in Emergency Management Domain
Gencturk, Mert; Evci, Enver; Guney, Arda; Kabak, Yildiray; Erturkmen, Gokce B. Laleci (2017-05-12)
This paper describes how semantic interoperability can be achieved in emergency management domain where different organizations in different domains should communicate through a number of distinct standards to manage crises and disasters effectively. To achieve this goal, a common ontology is defined as lingua franca and standard content models are mapped one by one to the ontology. Then, information represented in one standard is converted to another according to the mappings and exchanged between parties.
Event Extraction from Turkish Football Web-casting Texts Using Hand-crafted Templates
Doruk, Tunaoğlu; Alan, Özgür; Orkunt, Sabuncu; Samet, Akpınar; Çiçekli, Fehime Nihan; Alpaslan, Ferda Nur (2009-09-16)
In this paper, we present a domain specific information extraction approach. We use manually formed templates to extract information from unstructured documents where grammatical and syntactical errors occur frequently. We applied our approach to primarily Turkish unstructured soccer Web-casting texts. Compared to automated approaches we achieve high precision-recall rates (97% - 85%). In addition to that, unlike automated approaches we do not use part-of-speech taggers, parsers, phrase chunkers or that kin...
An Ontology-Based Expert System to Detect Service Level Agreement Violations
Karamanlıoğlu, Alper (2018-07-04)
In this paper, an expert system developed with an ontology-based approach to detect Service Level Agreement (SLA) violations is presented. The widespread use of SLAs in various areas complicates SLA management and in particular the detection of violations. Although it is necessary to automatically detect SLA violations, developing a different solution for each domain is quite costly. Several domains were investigated, and many common concepts have been identified in terms of SLAs. Nevertheless, it has been ...
An Intelligent Inference System for Robot Hand Optimal Grasp Preshaping
BAYSAL, CABBAR VEYSEL; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref (Atlantis Press, 2010-10-01)
This paper presents a novel Intelligent Inference System (IIS) for the determination of an optimum preshape for multifingered robot hand grasping, given object under a manipulation task. The IIS is formed as hybrid agent architecture, by the synthesis of object properties, manipulation task characteristics, grasp space partitioning, low-level kinematical analysis, evaluation of contact wrench patterns via fuzzy approximate reasoning and ANN structure for incremental learning. The IIS is implemented in softw...
