The concentration and major sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were evaluated in the sediments from a special environmental protection area located near a transformer maintenance and repair facility (TMRF) in Ankara, Turkey. aPCB concentrations analyzed on Aroclor and congener basis (seven indicator congeners) ranged from 0.1 to 84.2 and 0.1 to 21.7 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Results show that higher total PCB concentrations were localized around one of the drainage channels of the TMRF. Identity and contribution of PCB sources were predicted using a chemical mass balance (CMB) based receptor model. The CMB model typically identified Aroclor 1260, the PCB mixture frequently used in transformers, as the major PCB source confirming the effect of the TMRF on the area. Poor prediction of some sample congener profiles suggest presence of environmental degradation mechanisms such as volatilization and differential solubilization of lower chlorinated congeners from sediments.

Accumulation of Some Heavy Metals Seasonally in Hysterotylacium aduncum (Nematoda) and Its Host Red Sea Bream, Pagellus erythrinus (Sparidae) from Gulf of Iskenderun (North-Eastern Mediterranean)
DURAL, MELTEM; Genc, Ercument; Yemenicioglu, Semal; SANGÜN, MUSTAFA KEMAL (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2010-01-01)
The Red Sea Bream's nematode and Sparus aurata, sampled from the Iskenderun Bay, North-eastern Mediterranean in March 2008 were analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) for their some heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mg, Pb and Zn) levels. The metal concentrations of the parasites were compared to different organs (liver, muscle, swimbladder, intestine and skin) of the fish hosts. The highest Cd (0.303 mg/kgg ww) concentrations were found in the muscle, highest Cr (4...
TRANSPORT OF DISSOLVED DISPERSED PETROLEUM-HYDROCARBONS IN THE NORTHEASTERN MEDITERRANEAN
YILMAZ, A; SAYDAM, AC; BASTURK, O; SALIHOGLU, I (Informa UK Limited, 1991-01-01)
The distribution and transportation of Dissolved/Dispersed Petroleum Hydrocarbons (DDPH) were investigated in the Northern Levantine together with the physical dynamics of the region. It was clearly observed that the characteristic meso‐scale eddies formed in the area strongly affect the distribution of this pollutant. A recent example of cruises which was performed in March 1989, covered relatively large scale are in the Eastern Mediterranean and the chemistry studies coupled with the physical data for thi...
Biofilms attached to Myriophyllum spicatum play a dominant role in nitrogen removal in constructed wetland mesocosms with submersed macrophytes: Evidence from N-15 tracking, nitrogen budgets and metagenomics analyses
Mu, Xiaoying; Lv, Xiaoyang; Liu, Wei; Qiu, Changhao; Ma, Yu; Zhang, Songhe; Jeppesen, Erik (Elsevier BV, 2020-11-01)
The mechanisms behind nitrogen removal by the submersed macrophyte-biofilm complex in wetlands remain to be fully elucidated. This study investigated the role of Myriophyllum spicatum and the biofilm on their leaves in nitrogen removal in mesocosm experiments. N-15 tracking showed that 61.9% and 30% of the N-15, respectively, was removed from the system and assimilated by the macrophyte-biofilm complex after loading with 5.4 mg L-1 N-15 labelled NH4+ for 17 days. Nitrogen budget results showed that about 0....
WASTE-WATER MANAGEMENT FOR ISTANBUL - BASIS FOR TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL
ORHON, D; USLU, O; MERIC, S; SALIHOGLU, I; FILIBELI, A (Elsevier BV, 1994-01-01)
A number of studies have so far been conducted to assess the magnitude of pollution generated by domestic and industrial sources in the Istanbul Metropolitan Area. They indicate that a management scheme for wastewater treatment and disposal should involve a total discharge of 15.4 m3 s-1 with a potential pollution load of 330 tons BOD5 day-1 for 1990. A scheme of this magnitude inevitably requires careful evaluation of receiving water characteristics, both from an oceanographic and a quality standpoint.
Levels, Distribution, and Sources of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Sediments of Lake Eymir, Turkey
Gedik, Kadir; İmamoğlu, İpek (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-08-01)
Little information is available on the occurrence and fate of persistent organic pollutants in lakes of Turkey. The present study was performed as a first step to assess the occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in surface sediments of Lake Eymir located in a special protection area. I 41PCB pound concentrations range from 1.09 to 2.33 ng g(-1) in 62 sediment samples collected from the lake. The spatial homogeneity of the PCBs along the whole lake sugges...
