The design, manufacture and calibration of two special force transducers, capable of measuring the axial force, shear, and bending moment at the base of a structural column are presented. The special force transducers were fabricated to measure the reactions at the base of the exterior columns of a reinforced concrete three-bay, two-story test specimen. The force transducers had the following capacities: 35 kN for axial load, 4 kN for shear, and 3 kN in for bending moment. These values include a safety factor of 2.0. Each force transducer was composed of six independent load cells. Four of these load cells were placed vertically and the other two diagonally. In total, eight calibration tests were conducted on each of the two transducers to form a calibration matrix for converting the six load cell readings into three reaction components. The results of the calibration procedure were very successful with the differences between the applied and calculated values generally less than 2%. The two force transducers were subsequently used in a frame test and they provided an excellent way to measure the internal forces without significantly affecting the overall behavior of the structure.

Nonlinear Fiber Modeling of Steel-Concrete Partially Composite Beams with Channel Connectors
Ozturk, Alper; Baran, Eray; Tort, Cenk (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-05-01)
A simplified nonlinear fiber-based finite element model of steel-concrete partially composite beams utilizing channel type mechanical shear connectors is developed in OpenSees framework. The interaction between steel beam and concrete slab is accounted for by introducing nonlinear zero length elements and rigid links. The channel shear connector response used in numerical models is based on the previously obtained experimental response from pushout tests. Accuracy of the numerical models in predicting the r...
A SHEAR FLEXIBLE FINITE-ELEMENT FOR NONUNIFORM, LAMINATED COMPOSITE BEAMS
Oral, Süha (Elsevier BV, 1991-01-01)
A shear flexible finite element is formulated for linearly tapered, symmetrically laminated composite beams. The element has three nodes and 18 degrees of freedom. The three-node configuration is obtained from a five-node parent element by constraining the shear angle variation to be linear. The bending in two planes, twisting and stretching are considered. The performance of the element is tested with isotropic and composite materials, constant and variable cross-sections, and straight and curved geome...
Analysis of specimen size effects in inclined compression test on laminated elastomeric bearings
Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2004-07-01)
Inclined compression test method is a practical way of determining the shear modulus of full-size laminated elastomeric bearings. Performing full-size bearing tests requires high-capacity testing machines. It may be possible to cut the specimens into smaller sizes for testing purposes. Limited amount of experimental data show that specimen size has a significant effect on the measured shear modulus. In this paper, the Haringx shear weak column theory is used to identify the important geometric specimen prop...
Analysis of silo supporting ring beams resting on discrete supports
Zeybek, Ozer; Topkaya, Cem; Rotter, J. Michael (Elsevier BV, 2019-02-01)
Elevated cylindrical metal silos are often supported on a ring beam which rests on discrete column supports. The ring beam plays an important role in redistributing the majority of the discrete forces from the column supports into a more uniform stress state in the cylindrical wall, which is necessary to reduce the potential for buckling of the shell wall.
The effect of shape memory alloys on the ductility of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints using the damage plasticity model
Halahla, Abdulsamee M.; Abu Tahnat, Yazan B.; Almasri, Amin H.; Voyiadjis, George Z. (Elsevier BV, 2019-12-01)
Using shape memory alloys (SMA) bars can significantly enhance the ductility of exterior reinforced concrete joints, where they can replace the conventional steel reinforcement. This research focuses on studying the effect of using SMA on the ductility capacity of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints at different column axial load levels. Finite element analysis was carried out and compared with the experimental results from the literature for verification purposes, and both were compared with th...
