In this study, as alternative methods to conventional production methods involving thin section copper permanent mould casting (fast solidification) and water atomization (rapid solidification) of AISI DC 53 cold work tool steel have been investigated. Thin slabs obtained by copper mould casting was homogenized at 1150 degrees C for one hour and then hot rolling was be applied. After hot rolling, conventional heat treatment have been applied to thin slabs. The same heat treatment procedure have been performed for a commercially available AISI DC 53 which is manufactured by thick section ingot casting and rolling. In order to investigate also the effect of rapid solidification on AISI DC 53 tool steel, steel powder was produced by water atomization technique. Experiments have revealed that thin steel slabs in permanent copper mould and rapidly solidified tool steel powder by water atomization have a more refined primary M7C3 carbides than commercially available steel.

Liquid steel flow in continuous casting machine: Modelling and measurement
Yavuz, Mehmet Metin (Informa UK Limited, 2011-08-01)
Single phase (liquid steel) and two-phase (liquid steel and argon bubbles) three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic and heat transfer models were developed for the continuous casting machines of ArcelorMittal. The computational domains include tundishes, slide gates, submerged entry nozzles and moulds. The effects of buoyancy, tundish design, tundish practices, nozzle design and caster practices on flow structure were investigated. Mathematical modelling is discussed in detail. In addition, submeniscus...
Properties of YBCO superconductors prepared by ammonium nitrate melt and solid-state reaction methods
Sozeri, Huseyin; Ozkan, Husnu; Ghazanfari, Nader (Elsevier BV, 2007-01-31)
Ceramic YBCO superconductors were prepared by: (1) ammonium nitrate melt, (2) solid-state reaction methods and the properties of the samples obtained were compared. Under the same annealing conditions single phase YBCO was synthesized at a lower temperature by the former method. Moreover, at 900 degrees C Y-123 phase and the initially adjusted Y-211 additive could be formed using ammonium nitrate melt, but not with the solid-state method which leads Y-123 at a higher temperature (950 degrees C) without Y-21...
Electrochemical decomposition of SiO2 pellets to form silicon in molten salts
Ergul, Emre; Karakaya, İshak; Erdogan, Metehan (Elsevier BV, 2011-01-21)
Direct electrochemical reduction of porous SiO2 pellets in molten CaCl2 salt and CaCl2-NaCl salt mixture was investigated by applying 2.8 V potential. The study focused on the effects of temperature, particle size of SiO2 powder starting material and the behavior of cathode contacting materials during electrochemical reduction process. The starting materials and the electrolysis products were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy mainly. The studies showed that smaller...

In this study, effects of simultaneous Mo and W substitution for Nb additions on the stability and magnetic properties of Fe-Co-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) alloys fabricated by centrifugal casting are investigated. The saturation magnetization (J(s)) and coercivity (H(c)) for the as-cast Fe(36)CO(36)B(19.2)Si(4.8)X(4) (X = Nb or Mo(0.5)W(0.5)) BMG alloys and melt-spun Fe(36)Co(36)B(19.2)Si(4.8)Mo(2)W(2) were in the range of 1.02-1.57T and 11.13-1685 A/m, respectively. The Fe(36)Co(36)B(19.2)Si(4.8)X(4) ...
Structural and electrical properties of TlGa(SxSe1-x)(2) mixed crystals
KARABULUT, ORHAN; Parlak, Mehmet; Mamedov, G. M. (Elsevier BV, 2007-01-21)
Systematic investigations of crystal structure, electrical conductivity and photoconductivity have been carried out on the complete series of TlGa(SxSe1-x)(2) solid solutions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses together with TREOR90 computer program have revealed that this compound shows different structural modifications at each composition. The possible charge transfer mechanisms have been investigated by performing temperature dependent electrical conductivity measurements in the temperature range of 100-4...
