The use of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in sol-gel synthesized titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysts as templates was systematically studied. CNTs have high oxidative thermal stability and the controlled removal of CNTs can be achieved at lower temperatures under air flow by the use of Na, Fe, and Co as a catalyst. These catalysts helped to reduce the oxidation temperature of CNTs; thus anatase phase was achieved without significant sintering. The use of a promoter, heat treatment, and various heat treatment atmospheres was effective in specific surface area, crystallinity, and photocatalytic activity against methylene blue (MB) degradation. While the specific surface area of bare TiO2 was 22 m(2)/g, after templating surface areas as high as 191 m(2)/g were obtained. For the photocatalytic characterization, with bare TiO2, the rate constant for MB decomposition was 0.81 h(-1), and for CNT TiO2 it was 1.31 h(-1). Moreover, after Na promotion, the rate constant increased to 1.85 h(-1). The results showed that CNTs can be used as a template to tailor and improve the textural properties. Moreover, as a novel material, the Na promotion in CNT TiO2 samples showed the best photocatalytic activity by enhancing the interaction between TiO2 and CNT surfaces.

Synthesis of Photocatalytic Titanium Dioxide Nanopowders Using Different Acid Catalysers
Mohammed, Ahmed Hafedh Mohammed; Park, Jongee; Öztürk, Abdullah (2018-07-17)
Photocatalytic titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were synthesized via acid assisted sol-gel process. The effects of different acids namely; acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid on the formation of TiO2 nanoparticles and their photocatalytic properties were investigated. XRD, SEM, and UV-Vis spectrophotometer analyses were performed to examine the physical and chemical characteristics of the nano powders. The results showed that only anatase phase of TiO2nanoparticleswith different crystallite...

Synthesis and characterization of conjugated polymers with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane pendant groups
Ertan, Salih; Kaynak, Cevdet; Cihaner, Atilla; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2017)
In this thesis, a series of monomers covalently bonded to polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) pendant group was designed and synthesized. POSS group is a hybrid organic-inorganic nanostructure with 1 to 3 nm diameter. POSS which has a cage structure is mainly composed of silicon (Si) (at vertices) and oxygen (O) (in the middle of the edge). POSS nanostructure can be modified through the vertices with organic functional groups. POSS groups provide different properties, such as thermal robustness, mec...
Production of boron nitride nanotubes and their uses in polymer composites
Demir, Can; Sezgi, Naime Aslı; Bayram, Göknur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2010)
Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), firstly synthesized in 1995, are structural analogues of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with alternating boron and nitrogen atoms instead of carbon atoms. Besides their structure, mechanical and thermal properties of BNNTs are very similar to the remarkable properties of CNTs. However, BNNTs have higher resistance to oxidation than CNTs. Also, BNNTs are electrically isolating. Therefore, they are envisioned as suitable fillers for the fabrication of mechanically and thermally enhan...
Development of a novel PANI@WO3 hybrid composite and its application as a promising adsorbent for Cr(VI) ions removal
Hsini, Abdelghani; Naciri, Yassine; Laabd, Mohamed; Bouzıanı, Asmae; Navío, J.A.; Puga, F.; Boukherroub, Rabah; Lakhmiri, Rajae; Albourine, Abdallah (2021-10-01)
In the current study, an in-situ oxidative polymerization method was used to synthesize polyaniline-coated tungsten trioxide biphasic composite (PANI@WO3). The as-developed composite material properties were elucidated using different characterization tools such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2 sorption-desorption isotherm, and X-ray photoelect...
