In Turkey, the satisfaction of households with their neighborhoods has never been an explicit concern of policymakers. Multistory apartment buildings dominate the urban environment, and they lack, in most cases, any significant social and physical infrastructure. This has raised questions of how the neighborhood satisfaction of households can be measured and understood. This study investigates the neighborhood satisfaction of households in apartment buildings in the case of urban Ankara. The Ankara Survey reveals that households are mostly satisfied (68%) with their neighborhoods, while the results of a multivariate analysis pinpoint locational concerns are the leading factor in neighborhood satisfaction in Ankara, with no socioeconomic factors emerging as significant. Among the sociodemographic variables, only tenure displays significant results. The study concludes that the dual consumption/investment role of housing for owner-occupiers differentiates their satisfaction levels. Furthermore, where environs and dwellings offer similar spatial attributes to both tenants and owner-occupiers, the households' individual perceptions become a more determining factor.

Housing production under less-regulated market conditions in Turkey
Türel, Ali; KOÇ, HÜLYA (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2015-03-01)
In recent years, the numbers of annual housing starts in Turkey have greatly exceeded the increases in the number of households. Such high levels of housing output occur under less-regulated and highly competitive market conditions, and when conventional housing policies associated with a welfare state are not introduced. In addition, the decentralized planning system and the potential for profit through housing investments when compared to most other sectors appear to have been instrumental in the high lev...
Empirical investigation of owner-occupiers' reinvestments in housing: the case of Ankara, Turkey
Özdemir Sarı, Özgül Burcu (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2014-03-01)
In Turkey, reinvestments in the existing housing stock are entirely dependent on households' decisions in the free market. There are no policies to consider reinvestment processes, and the body of knowledge on households' reinvestment decisions is scant. Understanding how individual reinvestment decisions are determined is vital to devise policy measures to improve the condition of the existing housing stock and neighbourhoods. In this study, an attempt is made to identify the basic motivations and factors ...
Not Only Helpless but also Hopeless: Changing Dynamics of Urban Poverty in Turkey, the Case of Sultanbeyli, Istanbul
Pınarcıoğlu, Mehmet Melih (Informa UK Limited, 2008-01-01)
This paper is an attempt to understand the changing characteristics of urban poverty in Turkey since 1980. First, it analyses how the urban poor in Turkey had adopted aggressive survival strategies by strengthening their solidarity networks on religious, ethnic and cultural bases until the 2000s. Then it sheds light on how those networks have dissolved later on thanks to a set of internal and external factors and concludes that Turkey now faces deepening poverty levels and engendering new forms and dynamics...
On the trajectory of urbanisation in Turkey - An attempt at periodisation
Şengül, Hüseyin Tarık (Liverpool University Press, 2003-05-01)
The main objective of this article is to provide a periodisation of the Turkish urban experience by dividing it into three distinct phases: the urbanisation of the state in the context of nation-state formation; the urbanisation of labour power in the context of rapid migration from rural areas; and finally the urbanisation of capital in the context of globalisation. The article argues that recent trends point to a striking socio-spatial polarisation as well as to fragmentation in the Turkish cities.
Reclaiming the right to the city: Reflections on the urban uprisings in Turkey
Kuymulu, Mehmet Barış (Informa UK Limited, 2013-07-08)
The spark that drew Istanbul into a fire of protest and uprising was initially set off by a modest ‘occupy style’ peaceful resistance, staged against the destruction of an historically public park, an urban commons, in order to make way for yet another shopping mall in Istanbul. Following explicit police violence against the protestors, who were openly discredited by the government for being a few looters, the urban centers of Turkey saw a full-fledged uprising, gathering considerable international steam as...
