Cracks due to thermal fatigue phenomenon can lead to serious degradations in both structural performance and service quality of asphalt concrete roadways. Thermal fatigue cracks occur in regions with moderate climates as a result of cyclic thermal strains/stresses within the restrained pavement layers. In this study, an experimental setup is developed to measure thermal fatigue resistance of asphalt concrete specimens under constant strain amplitude loading. To simulate thermal fatigue behavior of asphalt concrete, uniaxial loading is mechanically applied to achieve constant amplitude sinusoidal strains at a frequency of 0.01 Hz. Statistical analyses of test data indicate that asphalt content, aggregate source and asphalt binder grading have the strongest effect on thermal fatigue resistance of asphalt concrete.

Mixed-mode fracture analysis of orthotropic functionally graded materials under mechanical and thermal loads
Dağ, Serkan; Sarikaya, Duygu (Elsevier BV, 2007-12-01)
Mixed-mode fracture problems of orthotropic functionally graded materials (FGMs) are examined under mechanical and thermal loading conditions. In the case of mechanical loading, an embedded crack in an orthotropic FGM layer is considered. The crack is assumed to be loaded by arbitrary normal and shear tractions that are applied to its surfaces. An analytical solution based on the singular integral equations and a numerical approach based on the enriched finite elements are developed to evaluate the mixed-mo...
Lifetime performance analysis of existing prestressed concrete bridge superstructures
Akgül, Ferhat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2004-12-01)
A general methodology for lifetime performance analysis of existing prestressed concrete girder bridges is presented. Only the superstructure components (slab and girders) are considered. The framework for the methodology is established by identifying four distinct categories: limit state equations, random variables, deterministic parameters, and constant coefficients. The limit state equations are derived by strictly adhering to the load and capacity formulas and requirements set forth in AASHTO specificat...
Vibration induced stress and accelerated life analyses of an aerospace structure
Özsoy, Serhan; Kadıoğlu, Fevzi Suat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
Fatigue failure of metallic structures operating under dynamic loading is a common occurrence in engineering applications. It is difficult to estimate the response of complicated systems analytically, due to structure̕s dynamic characteristics and varying loadings. Therefore, experimental, numerical or a combination of both methods are used for fatigue evaluations. Fatigue failure can occur on systems and platforms as well as components to be mounted on the platform. In this thesis, a helicopter̕s Missile W...
Lifetime performance analysis of existing steel girder bridge superstructures
Akgül, Ferhat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2004-12-01)
A general method for lifetime performance analysis of existing steel girder bridges is presented. Only the superstructure components are considered. The formulation is established by identifying four distinct categories: limit state equations, random variables, deterministic parameters, and constant coefficients. The limit state equations are derived by strictly adhering to the load and capacity formulas and requirements set forth in AASHTO specifications. Generality is pursued by establishing parametric li...
Investigation of Moisture Dissipation in Foam-Based Warm Mix Asphalt Using Synchrotron-Based X-Ray Microtomography
Kutay, M. Emin; Öztürk, Hande Işık (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2012-06-04)
Foam-based Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technologies decrease the viscosity of the asphalt so that it is workable during construction. However, after construction, viscosity increases rapidly as the foam disappears and temperature drops. During the process of dissipation of foam, depending on the environmental conditions, the moisture may not escape and may be trapped inside the mixture. This trapped moisture can cause detrimental failures by breaking the adhesive bonds between the aggregates and the asphalt bind...
