Effect of boron and iron stress on phytosiderophore production in barley
İnce, Yetkin Çaka; Yücel, Ayşe Meral; Department of Biology (2015)
Boron and iron are essential nutrients for growth and development of higher plants. Deficiency and toxicity of them cause significant changes in physiological, cellular and molecular make-up of plants. Iron uptake in barley is mainly achieved by production and release of phytosiderophores to the environment. On the other hand, production of phytosiderophores are affected by concentrations of boron and iron. Four enzymes which function in phytosiderophore hydroxymugineic acid (HMA) production namely NAS, NAA...
EFFECT OF HIGH PRESSURE ON LACTOCOCCAL BACTERIOPHAGES
Avsaroglu, M. Dilek; Bozoglu, Faruk; Akcelik, Mustafa; Bayındırlı, Alev (Wiley, 2009-02-01)
Four different host-specific lactococcal bacteriophages were subjected to high hydrostatic pressure and heat treatments. Pressure treatments were done at room temperature at 300 and 350 MPa for 5-40 min. Complete inactivation of bacteriophages was observed starting at 350 MPa for 20-min treatment at room temperature. The effect of heat on the bacteriophages was analyzed by heat treatment at 71.7C for predetermined lengths of time (1-5 min). Decrease in bacteriophage number was observed after 3 min of heat t...
Effect of cobalt-60 (gamma radiation) on multidrug-resistant multiple myeloma cell lines
Mutlu, Pelin; Ural, A. Ugur; Avcu, Ferit; Dirican, Bahar; Beyzadeoglu, Murat; Gündüz, Ufuk (2011-07-01)
Emergence of resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy is a major obstacle for the successful treatment of MM (multiple myeloma). Prednisone, vincristine and melphalan are commonly used chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of MM. In the current study, we examined the presence of possible cross-resistance between these drugs and gamma (gamma) radiation. Prednisone, vincristine and melphalan resistant RPMI-8226 and U-266 MM cells were generated by stepwise increasing concentrations of the drugs. The se...
Effect of water deficit conditions on superoxide dismutase isoenzyme activities in wheat
Inci, F; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni; Yucel, M (1998-01-01)
Superoxide dismutase (SOD, E.C.1.15.1.1) converts superoxide to hydrogen peroxide, therefore important in prevention of oxygen toxicity produced by several environmental stresses. In the present work, the effect of water deficit on the activity of SOD isoenzymes in roots and shoots of 10 day-old seedlings of seven wheat cultivars was studied. Bread wheat varieties showed different responses, while a general decrease in the SOD isoenzyme activity was observed in a durum variety. The obtained data suggest tha...
Effect of cold stress on barley (hordeum vulgare L.) superoxide dismutase isozyme activities and expression levels of cu/znsod gene
Kayıhan, Ceyhun; Yücel, Ayşe Meral; Department of Biotechnology (2007)
In this study, effect of cold stress and recovery on the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and the expression levels of Cu/ZnSOD gene were investigated in two barley cultivars (Tarm-92-winter type, Zafer-160-spring type). Eight days old barley seedlings were subjected to two different cold stresses; chilling stress at 4°C for 1, 3, 7 days and freezing stress at -3°C and -7°C. Analyses were performed both on leaf and root tissues. The SOD activities and isozyme patterns were determined by Native PAGE act...
