In this research, thermal characteristics and kinetic parameters of eight Turkish oil shale samples were determined by thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) at non-isothermal heating conditions both for pyrolysis and combustion processes. A general computer program was developed and the methods are compared with regard to their accuracy and the ease of interpretation of the kinetics of thermal decomposition. Activation energies of the samples were determined by five different methods and the results are discussed.

Evaluation of Turkish oil shales - Thermal analysis approach
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2001-12-01)
In this research, thermal characteristics of three Turkish oil shales (Himmetoglu, Beypazari and Hatuldag) were studied by thermal analysis techniques (differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry and pressurised differential scanning calorimetry). Two distinct exothermic peaks were identified in all experiments known as low-temperature oxidation and high-temperature oxidation reaction regions. Kinetic data were analysed by Arrhenius, and Coats and Redfern models and the results are discussed.
Application of TGA-MS technique for oil shale characterization and kinetics
Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Varfolomeev, Mikhail A.; Nurgaliev, Danis K.; Kandasamy, Jayaraman (2022-03-01)
Thermal characteristics and model free kinetics of four different oil shale samples were studied using simultaneous thermogravimetry-mass spectrometer (TGA-MS) analysis performed at three different heating rates and under air atmosphere. All the reaction regions and corresponding peak temperatures, mass loss, and the residue of oil shale samples were determined. Meanwhile, the main volatile products, primary alcohols, and aromatic compounds as products of oil shale combustion, were determined on the basis o...
Oil shale kinetics by differential methods
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-06-01)
In this research, pyrolysis and combustion behavior of three different oil shale samples from Turkey were characterized using thermal analysis techniques (TG/DTG). In pyrolysis experiments, two different mechanisms causing mass loss were observed as distillation and cracking. In combustion experiments, two distinct exothermic peaks were identified known low and high temperature oxidation. On the other hand, determination of activation energies are required for the estimation of oil extraction conditions fro...
Pyrolysis and Combustion Studies of Fossil Fuels by Thermal Analysis Methods Review
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (1995-02-01)
Instances where differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis have been applied to study the pyrolysis and combustion behaviour of fossil fuels (peat, lignite, bituminous coals, anthracite, oil shales, crude oils, lignite-oil mixtures, etc.) are reviewed. The literature survey showed that thermal methods were important not only theoretically but also from a practical point of view.
Recent developments in the application of thermal analysis techniques in fossil fuels
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2008-03-01)
In this review, application of thermal analysis techniques (differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, etc.) for fossil fuel characterization and kinetics are reviewed between 2001 and 2006. The results presented clearly showed that thermal analysis applications are well-established techniques used in fossil fuel research area.
