Formation of hexagonal boron nitride by carbothermic reduction of boric oxide under nitrogen atmosphere at 1500 degrees C was investigated. Experiments were performed for durations in the range of 15 min to 3 h. Reaction products were subjected to powder X-ray diffraction analysis, chemical analysis and were examined by scanning electron microscope. Formation of hexagonal boron nitride was found to be complete in 3 h with most forming in the initial 2 h. Boron carbide was found to exist in the reaction products of the experiments in which hexagonal boron nitride formation was not complete. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of boron carbide in the carbothermic production of hexagonal boron nitride. For this purpose, conversion reaction of boron carbide into hexagonal boron nitride was studied. Boron carbide used in these experiments was produced in the same conditions that hexagonal boron nitride was formed, but under argon atmosphere. It was found that formation of hexagonal boron nitride from boron carbide-boric oxide mixtures was slower than activated carbon-boric oxide mixtures. It was concluded that boron carbide is not a necessary intermediate product in the carbothermic production of hexagonal boron nitride.

The solid state amorphous structure and devitrification products of Al90Tb10 alloys produced by Cu block meltspinning and magnetron sputtering were investigated by a combined study of differential scanning calorimetry, in-situ X-ray diffraction and conventional transmission electron microscopy. The as-prepared specimens were found to be fully amorphous according to the electron and X-ray diffraction. The thermal analysis and in-situ XRD analyses of the amorphous samples having the same chemistry but differe...
Effect of calcium oxide addition on carbothermic formation of hexagonal boron nitride
Özkenter, Ali Arda; Sevinç, Naci; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2009)
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) formation by carbothermic reduction of B2O3 under nitrogen atmosphere at 1500°C and effect of CaO addition into the initial B2O3 – active C mixture were investigated during this study. Reaction products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quantitative chemical analysis. Main aim of this study was to investigate the presence of a second reaction mechanism that catalytically affects h-BN formation during CaO or CaCO3 addition in...

Effect of CaCO3 on formation of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was investigated by holding CaCO3 free and CaCO3 added activated carbon-boric oxide mixtures under nitrogen atmosphere at 1500 degrees C for 30-120 min. Amount of CaCO3 addition was varied in the range of 0-50 wt.% of the initial mixture. Products were characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry, FT-IR analysis, quantitative chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and BET specific surface area analysis. It was observed that calcium carb...
Sintering and humidity-sensitive behaviour of the ZnCr2O4-K2CrO4 ceramic system
Bayhan, M; Hashemi, T; Brinkman, AW (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1997-12-15)
Solid state reaction at elevated temperatures and the sintering behaviour of zinc chromite formed by zinc oxide and chromite oxide were investigated. Crystalline structure, surface and fractured morphologies and humidity-sensitivity characteristics of ZnCr2O4-K2CrO4-CuO were studied. The fired ceramic body, which proved to be mainly constructed from ZnCr2O4 spinel grains, was porous. The humidity characteristics of the sensor showed that the resistance decreased as a logarithmic function with an increase in...
Microstructural investigation of Cu2+ doped nanohydroxyapatites
Evis, Zafer (Informa UK Limited, 2010-05-01)
Pure and Cu2+ doped nanohydroxyapatites were synthesised by a precipitation method to investigate the effect of Cu2+ ions on the structure of hydroxyapatite (HA) and its thermal stability after the air sintering at 1100 degrees C. A small amount of CaO was observed in the Cu2+ doped HAs after the X-ray diffraction results. The addition of Cu2+ changed the hexagonal lattice parameters of the HA and resulted in smaller grain size after sintering at 1100 degrees C. The addition of Cu2+ ions into HA resulted in...
