Ceramic fragments from the antique city of Aizanoi, Turkey were investigated by micro Raman spectrometry in conjunction with XRPD and SEM-EDX analyses. Some basic physical characteristics of the ceramic samples were also investigated. Mite and muscovite were determined as the main clay types in the ceramic fragments. Clay used in the production of ceramic wares was found to be calcareous in most of the samples. No high temperature clay minerals were detected in the ceramics. All ceramic fragments were found to be rich in iron content. Hematite and magnetite were identified to be the principle coloring agents in the investigated samples. The ceramics with hematite content were assessed to be fired in an oxygen rich atmosphere whereas the samples having magnetite were proposed to be fired in an inadequately ventilated kiln. Based on the presence of calcite, dolomite and TiO2 in the crystal form of anatase in the samples, firing temperature during production was estimated to be below 750 degrees C.

Strength of various sands in triaxial and cyclic direct shear tests
ÇABALAR, ALİ FIRAT; Dulundu, Kemal; Tuncay, Kağan (Elsevier BV, 2013-04-01)
This paper presents the result of an extensive series of experimental investigation carried out in triaxial and cyclic direct shear tests on sands having various properties, which were obtained from different locations in Turkey and in Northern Cyprus. In order to investigate the link between strength and physical properties (i.e., shape) of the sand particles, three series of triaxial tests (Consolidated-Drained, CD; Consolidated-Undrained, CU; and Unconsolidated-Undrained, UU) for each were performed unde...
Investigation of copolymers of thiophene-functionalized polystyrene with pyrrole by pyrolysis mass spectrometry
Papila, Ozge; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2006-06-01)
The thermal and structural characterization of electrochemically synthesized thiophene-functionalized polystyrene and pyrrole (PS/PPy) and their copolymers were investigated by direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry. The pyrolysis data confirmed the growth of polypyrrole onto the pendant thiophene moiety of polystyrene. It is determined that the electrolytic film has different properties from the mechanical mixture and the related homopolymers.
Characterization of nanostructured magnetite thin films produced by sol-gel processing
Eken, Ali Erdem; Özenbaş, Ahmet Macit (2009-06-01)
Nanocrystalline films of magnetite have been prepared by a novel sol-gel route in which, a solution of iron (III) nitrate dissolved in ethylene glycol was applied on glass substrates by spin coating. Coating solution showed Newtonian behaviour and viscosity was found as 0.0215 Pa.s. Annealing temperature was selected between 291 and 350 A degrees C by DTA analysis in order to obtain magnetite films. In-plane grazing angle XRD and TEM studies showed that magnetite phase was present upon annealing the films a...
Studies on blended cements containing a high volume of natural pozzolans
Uzal, B; Turanlı, Lutfullah (Elsevier BV, 2003-11-01)
This paper presents the results of an investigation on the characteristics of laboratory-produced blended portland cements containing 55% by weight volcanic tuffs from Turkey. Volcanic tuffs from two different resources were used. Using different grinding times, particle size distribution, setting time, compressive strength, and alkali-silica activity of the blended cements were investigated and compared with reference portland cements ground for the same time period. For the compressive strength test, a su...
Characterization of BPN Pyrotechnic Composition Containing Micro- and Nanometer-Sized Boron Particles
Koc, Suzan; Ulaş, Abdullah; Yilmaz, Nil Ezgi (Wiley, 2015-10-01)
The effect of micro- and nanometer-sized boron particles on boron-potassium nitrate (BPN) ignition composition was investigated in this paper. As a starting point, thermochemical calculations were made to determine the most promising ignition compositions. Both stoichiometric and fuel-rich formulations of BPN were produced to observe the performance variation due to boron content. Particle morphology of boron particles and the surface structure of the ignition compositions were investigated by SEM. The infl...
