Polyaniline in emeraldine form was synthesized in the presence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the electrochemical capacitance performance of thus formed composite as electrode material has been Studied. The polyaniline/carbon nanotubes (Pani/CNT) composite is found to result in a higher specific capacitance than that of either composite constituent, attributable to the double-layer capacitance behavior of the nanotubes in the Pani/CNT system. However, once assembled into a two-electrode cell, lower than expected specific capacitance values from 1 to 20 F/g were obtained, and such reduction is most likely caused by the contact resistance between the Pani/CNT electrodes and the nickel (Ni) current collectors. To improve the situation, a chemical treatment was applied to the nickel foil, and the Pani solution is then deposited on the surface of the foil to form a coated structure (Pani/Ni). The thickness and weight of the Pani films can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of the Pani solution. The specific capacitance of the cell with electrodes made of the new Pani/Ni composite was found to reach as high as 35.5 F/g. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 113: 1070-1081, 2009

Synthesis and Characterization of a New Conducting Polymer Based on 4-(2,5-di-2-thiophen-2-yl-pyrrol-1-yl)-phthalonitrile
Yavuz, Arzu; Bezgin, Buket; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (Wiley, 2009-12-05)
A new conducting polymer was synthesized by electrochemical polymerization of 4-(2,5-di-2-thiophen-2-yl-pyrrol-1-yl)-2-phthalonitrile (SNS-PN). Electrochemical polymerization of SNS-PN was performed in acetonitrile/0.2M LiClO4 solvent/electrolyte couple. Characterizations of the resulting polymer P(SNS-PN) were carried out by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic techniques. Spectroelectrochemical studies revealed that P(SNS-PN) has an electronic band gap of 2.45 eV...
Synthesis and characterization of poly(allyl methacrylate) obtained by gamma-radiation
Vardareli, Tugba K.; Usanmaz, Ali (Wiley, 2007-04-15)
Allyl methacrylate was polymerized by gamma-radiation under vacuum in solution and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) methods and also in the presence of atmospheric oxygen in bulk. The kinetic curve is S-type with a longer induction period, because of the presence of oxygen, in bulk polymerization. The curve for the solution polymerization is almost linear with a short induction period. The rate started to decrease after about 60% conversion and reached to a limiting conversion of 100%. The polyme...
Conducting Polymer Composites of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Filled Doped Polyaniline
Yilmaz, Faris; Kucukyavuz, Zuhal (Wiley, 2009-01-15)
A multiwalled carbon nanotube (c-MWNT)/polyaniline (PANI) composite was synthesized by an in situ chemical oxidative polymerization process. With the carbon nanotube loading increased from 0 to 30 wt %,, the conductivity also increased and became weakly temperature-dependent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies showed that the synthesis by an in situ process led to effective site-selective interactions between the quinoid ring of the PANI and the multiwalled nanotubes, facilitating charge-transf...
Characterization and Electrical Conductivity of Poly(ethylene glycol)/Polyacrylonitrile/Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Composites
Aqeel, Salem M.; Kucukyavuz, Zuhal (Wiley, 2011-01-05)
Polymer blends based on poly(ethylene glycol), polyacrylonitrile, and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by the solvent cast technique from the dispersion of the MWNTs in the concentration range 0-3.45 wt %. The interaction of the MWNTs with the polymer blend was confirmed by a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy study. The thermal properties of the polymer blend with the MWNTs were carried out by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was evident from DSC that the p...
Preparation of a conducting flexible material from silane coupling agent and hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene rubber by hydrolysis and condensation
Karatas, Y; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Tincer, T (Informa UK Limited, 2003-01-01)
Synthesis and characterization of a flexible polymer produced from silane coupling agent (SCA) and hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) were performed. Mechanical properties of chemically and electrochemically prepared conducting composites synthesized from this polymer were investigated. Conductivities of the composites were also measured. Polypyrrole enhanced the mechanical properties of the chemically prepared conducting composite. Doping with iodine greatly changed the conductivity of the composite....
