A kinetic study of the reaction between a hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) was carried out in the bulk state by using quantitative Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy. The reaction is shown to obey a second-order rate law, being first order in both the HTPB and IPDI concentrations. The activation parameters obtained from the evaluation of kinetic data are Delta H-double dagger = 41.1 +/- 0.4 kJ mol, Delta S-double dagger = -198 +/- 2 J K-1 mol(-1) and E-a = 43.8 +/- 0.4 kJ mol(-1), which are quite different from the solution values. However, they are in agreement with the results obtained on propellants by torsional braid measurements. The large negative value of the activation entropy is indicative of an associative mechanism, which is in accord with the second-order rate law for the polyurethane formation. Thermal stability and decomposition mechanism of poly(p-acryloyloxybenzoic) acid (PABA), p-methacryloyloxybenzoic acid (PMBA), and their graft coproducts of PP were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry, and TG/IR system, combined thermogravimetric analyzer, and FTIR spectrometer. The homopolymers and corresponding grafts were found to be stable in nitrogen atmosphere but started to decompose under atmospheric conditions when heated above 230 degrees C. PABA and PA...

A new tetrakis 4-(2,5-di-2-thiophen-2-yl-pyrrol-1-yl) substituted nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc-SNS) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), and UV-vis spectroscopies. The electrochemical polymerization of this newly synthesized NiPc-SNS was performed in dichloromethane (DCM)/tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) solvent/electrolyte couple. An insoluble film was deposited on the electrode surface, both during repetitive cycling and constant potential electr...

Conducting polymers containing polyether pseudocages (PI, PII, PIII) have been synthesized via chemical oxidation of 1,5-bis(1,1-pyrrole)-3-oxabutane (MI), 1,8-bis(I,I-pyrrole)-3,6-dioxahexane (MII), and 1,11-bis(1,1-pyrrole)-3,6,9-trioxaundecane (MIII) using anhydrous FeCl3 in CHCl3. Because as obtained polymer resins did not give any response toward any cations, they were reduced (undoped) using chemical reducing agents. Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide was found to be more effective in undoping to obtain mor...

Polyaniline in emeraldine form was synthesized in the presence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the electrochemical capacitance performance of thus formed composite as electrode material has been Studied. The polyaniline/carbon nanotubes (Pani/CNT) composite is found to result in a higher specific capacitance than that of either composite constituent, attributable to the double-layer capacitance behavior of the nanotubes in the Pani/CNT system. However, once assembled into a two-electrode cell, l...
Side-chain functionalization of polystyrene with maleic anhydride in the presence of Lewis acids

Polystyrenes with different molecular weights were chemically modified with maleic anhydride by use of certain cationic catalysts of Lewis acid type (BF3 . OEt(2), AlCl3, TiCl4, ZnCl2, FeCl3, and SnCl4) in chloroform. The effects of molecular weight of polystyrene, as well as type of Lewis acid used, on properties and structure of products were investigated. The interrelation between the molecular weight of polystyrene and content of carboxyl groups in the products was made. A direct relationship between th...
