The anaerobic treatability and methane generation potential of three different cotton wastes namely, cotton stalks, cotton seed hull and cotton oil cake were determined in batch reactors. In addition, the effects of nutrient and trace metal supplementation were also investigated. To this purpose biochemical methane potential (BMP) experiments were performed for two different waste concentrations, namely 30 and 60g/l. The results revealed that cotton wastes can be treated anacrobically and are a good source of biogas. Approximately 65, 86 and 78 ml CH4 were produced in 23 days from 1 g of cotton stalks, cotton seed hull and cotton oil cake in the presence of basal medium (BM), respectively. BM supplementation had an important positive affect on the production of biogas.

Enzymatic production of xylooligosaccharides from cotton stalks

Xylooligosaccharide (XO) production was performed from xylan, which was obtained by alkali extraction from cotton stalk, a major agricultural waste in Turkey. Enzymatic hydrolysis was selected to prevent byproduct formation such as xylose and furfural. Xylan was hydrolyzed using a commercial xylanase preparation, and the effects of pH, temperature, hydrolysis period, and substrate and enzyme concentrations on the XO yield and degree of polymerization (DP) were investigated. Cotton stalk contains about 21% x...
Anaerobic biotransformation and methane generation potential of cheese whey in batch and UASB reactors
Bayramoğlu, Tuba Hande; GÜVEN, ENGİN; DEMİRER, GÖKSEL NİYAZİ (2001-03-01)
Anaerobic treatability and methane generation potential of cheese whey were determined in batch reactors. Furthermore, the effect of nutrient and trace metal supplementation on the batch anaerobic treatment, and the high-rate anaerobic treatability of cheese whey in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were investigated. To this purpose biochemical methane potential experiments were conducted and single- and two-stage UASB reactors with granular cultures were operated. In UASB experiments signifi...
Synergistic effects of biochar and processed fly ash on bioavailability, transformation and accumulation of heavy metals by maize (Zea mays L.) in coal-mining contaminated soil
Munir, Mehr Ahmed Mujtaba; Liu, Guijian; Yousaf, Balal; Ali, Muhammad Ubaid; Abbas, Qumber; Ullah, Habib (2020-02-01)
In the paper, hydrothermally (HT) treated, sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and hydrochloric acid (HCI) washed fly ashes (FA) were used to examine the applied effects with and without biochar (BC) on the bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) and growth of maize (Zea mays L) plants in coal -mining contaminated soil. Addition of BC in combination with these processed fly ashes (PFA) significantly increased the soil pH, EC, and soil organic carbon (SOC). Individual application of BC and PFA increased the available conte...
Wearable supercapacitors based on nickel tungstate decorated commercial cotton fabrics
Hekmat, Farzaneh; Tutel, Yusuf; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah (2020-07-01)
Symmetric supercapacitors (SSCs) with remarkable energy storing capability, high specific power as well as long-term cyclic stability were fabricated from nickel tungstate (NiWO4) @ nickel oxide (NiOx) decorated commercial cotton fabrics (CCFs). A commercial cotton-based textile was first made conductive by the state of the art ultrasonic spray coating method. This was followed by chemical and electrochemical processes to decorate activated CCFs with NiO(x)and NiWO4, respectively. The assembled SSCs had the...
Anaerobic Digestability and Biogas Production Capacity of Pistachio Processing Wastewater in UASB Reactors
Gur, E.; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2019-08-01)
High volumes of wastewater with considerable levels of organic and phenolic compounds and solid material are produced during pistachio processing. There is not a commonly adopted treatment technology for the wastes produced during pistachio processing. The objective of this study is to evaluate the anaerobic digestability and biogas production capacity of pistachio processing wastewater in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors for the first time in the literature. The results indicated that pistac...
