We consider the problem of choosing the best of a set of alternatives where each alternative is evaluated on multiple criteria. We develop a visual interactive approach assuming that the decision maker (DM) has a general monotone utility function. The approach partitions the criteria space into nonoverlapping cells. The DM uses various graphical aids to move between cells and to further manipulate selected cells with the goal of creating cells that have ideal points less preferred than an alternative. When the DM identifies such cells, all alternatives in those cells are eliminated from further consideration. The DM may also compare pairs of alternatives. The approach terminates with the most preferred alternative of the DM.

An interactive approach for multiobjective decision making
Koksalan, M; Karasakal, Esra (Informa UK Limited, 2006-05-01)
We develop an interactive approach for multiobjective decision-making problems, where the solution space is defined by a set of constraints. We first reduce the solution space by eliminating some undesirable regions. We generate solutions (partition ideals) that dominate portions of the efficient frontier and the decision maker (DM) compares these with feasible solutions. Whenever the decision maker prefers a feasible solution, we eliminate the region dominated by the partition ideal. We then employ an inte...
An interactive algorithm for multiobjective ranking for underlying linear and quasiconcave value functions
TEZCANER ÖZTÜRK, DİCLEHAN; Köksalan, Mustafa Murat (Wiley, 2019-07-29)
We develop interactive algorithms to find a strict total order for a set of discrete alternatives for two different value functions: linear and quasiconcave. The algorithms first construct a preference matrix and then find a strict total order. Based on the ordering, they select a meaningful pair of alternatives to present the decision maker (DM) for comparison. We employ methods to find all implied preferences of the DM, after he or she makes a preference. Considering all the preferences of the DM, the pre...
An interactive sorting method for additive utility functions
Koeksalan, Murat; Oezpeynirci, Selin Bilgin (Elsevier BV, 2009-09-01)
In this paper, we consider the problem of placing alternatives that are defined by multiple criteria into preference-ordered categories. We consider a method that estimates an additive utility function and demonstrate that it may misclassify many alternatives even when substantial preference information is obtained from the decision maker (DM) to estimate the function. To resolve this difficulty, we develop an interactive approach. Our approach occasionally requires the DM to place some reference alternativ...
AN APPROACH FOR FINDING THE MOST PREFERRED ALTERNATIVE IN THE PRESENCE OF MULTIPLE CRITERIA
Köksalan, Mustafa Murat; TANER, OV (Elsevier BV, 1992-07-10)
An interactive approach for discrete multiple criteria decision making problems is developed. The approach requires the decision maker to compare pairs of presented alternatives. These alternatives may be existing alternatives or dummy alternatives created from existing alternatives. Inferior alternatives are sequentially eliminated by either using the responses of the decision maker directly or by constructing cones of inferior solutions based on these responses. The approach converges to the most preferre...
A New Outranking-Based Approach for Assigning Alternatives to Ordered Classes
Köksalan, Mustafa Murat; Mousseau, Vincent; Ozpeynirci, Oezguer; Ozpeynirci, Selin Bilgin (Wiley, 2009-02-01)
We consider the problem of assigning alternatives evaluated on several criteria into ordered categories C(1), C(2), ..., C(p). This problem is known as the multi-criteria sorting problem and arises in many situations such as classifying countries into different risk levels based on economical and socio-political criteria, evaluating credit applications of bank customers. We are interested in sorting methods that are grounded on the construction Of Outranking relations. Among these, the Electre Tri method re...
