The decomposition of copper(II) trihalophenoxides in acetonitrile yields poly(dihalophenylene oxide)s. A 1H n.m.r. study has shown that a bromine atom in the 4‐position of the trihalophenoxides results in polymers having higher linearity. Various dynamic and static methods, within the framework of Hückel molecular orbital theory, have been used to explain the product distribution.

The decomposition of copper(II) 2,6‐dibromo‐4‐chlorophenoxide in acetonitrile yields poly(dihalophenylene oxide). 1H NMR study revealed that 1,4‐catenation was favoured over 1,2‐catenation, leading to higher linearity in the structure.

Ruthenium(0) nanoparticles supported on nanoceria (Ru-0/CeO2) were prepared by reduction of Ru3+ ions on the surface of ceria using aqueous solution of NaBH4. The electrophilic addition of bromine to dibromohomobenzonorbornadiene derivatives at -45 +/- 5degreesC led to the formation of the rearranged and non-rearranged tetrabromides in a ratio of 6:4. However, high-temperature bromination of the same system in CCl4 at 77degreesC produced only non-rearranged products.
