Energy demand has been increasing, but traditional sources of energy are depletable. New investments are needed in renewable energy production. Hydroelectric power plants are often considered a feasible renewable source of energy and are often organized as a public private partnerships (PPP). However, risk factors stemming from the macro environment as well as project conditions should be considered in performing feasibility studies. The objective of this study was to develop a method that can be used to predict the profitability of hydropower investments considering the relevant risk factors. To that end, a cash flow that represents the construction and operation period is set up, the risk factors involved in such projects are identified, the impacts of these risk factors on the cash flow parameters are assessed, and Monte Carlo simulation is performed to estimate the net present value (NPV) of a hydropower investment. The proposed method was tested in a hydropower investment located in Turkey and generated credible results that could be of great benefit to potential investors operating in similar conditions. The primary contribution of this research is the creation of a method that allows investors to assess the profitability of a hydropower investment by using a stochastic approach.

Quantifying the revenue gain of operating a cascade hydropower plant system as a pumped-storage hydropower system
Ak, Mumtaz; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Savaşaneril Tüfekci, Seçil (Elsevier BV, 2019-08-01)
Pumped-storage hydropower is one of the most viable large-scale energy storage options. When managed optimally, pumped-storage hydropower may also bring monetary benefits due to price variations in the electricity market. Two main concerns are the lack of suitable sites and potential environmental impacts, which can be alleviated by using already existing, closely situated reservoirs. The goal of this study is to develop operating strategies for cascade pumped-storage hydropower systems composed of already ...
Evaluation and comparasion of the wave energy potential in selected coastal regions in Turkey
Duman, Çağatay; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
In order to meet energy needs in world, studies on wave energy, alternative energy, are becoming more and more important with each passing day. The purpose of this study is to identify the wave energy potential along the coastline of Turkey. For this purpose, the data of wind speed and direction, swell and wind wave height, period and direction for certain duration with the six hours time intervals are obtained from ECMWF for the wind and wave climate computations. In order to compute the wind and wave clim...
A real options approach to valuation of photovoltaic power investments on rooftops of residential areas in Turkey
Or, Bartu; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Department of Civil Engineering (2023-1-24)
Diminishing non-renewable energy resources, increasing energy prices, and the outgrowth of carbon footprints have made investments in renewable energy resources indispensable. Power generation through renewable solar energy can be made through state-of-art photovoltaic (PV) systems. Although PV systems on residential rooftops offer great solar energy potential, initial costs are considerably high, and there exist such uncertainties as fluctuating PV panel prices, changing meteorological conditions affecting...
Analysing design parameters of hydroelectric power plant projects to develop cost decision models by using regresion and neural network tools
Şahin, Hacı Bayram; Gündüz, Murat; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Energy is increasingly becoming more important in today’s world. Ascending of energy consumption due to development of technology and dense population of earth causes greenhouse effect. One of the most valuable energy sources is hydro energy. Because of limited energy sources and excessive energy usage, cost of energy is rising. There are many ways to generate electricity. Among the electricity generation units, hydroelectric power plants are very important, since they are renewable energy sources and they ...
Parametric study of high-level nuclear waste storage in underground hard rock caverns
Altıntaş, Taci Emre; Abduljabar, Alak Abdulsatar Abduljabar; Yardımcı, Ahmet Güneş (2022-03-22)
Rising global energy demand has set nuclear energy as a trending power generation method dueto its production cost and efficiency advantages. Remnants of the reactive process create large amountsof radioactive waste that pose environmental risks in case of improper management. High-level wastesare widely isolated by burying into deep geological voids or man-made excavations due to continuousheat emission for hundreds of years. Although design and excavating large underground caverns is apart of ordinary Roc...
