Evaluation and comparasion of the wave energy potential in selected coastal regions in Turkey

Duman, Çağatay
In order to meet energy needs in world, studies on wave energy, alternative energy, are becoming more and more important with each passing day. The purpose of this study is to identify the wave energy potential along the coastline of Turkey. For this purpose, the data of wind speed and direction, swell and wind wave height, period and direction for certain duration with the six hours time intervals are obtained from ECMWF for the wind and wave climate computations. In order to compute the wind and wave climate at any selected coastal location, software is developed by Serhan Aldoğan in his MSc thesis. By the help of the specifically developed software, for every location, by utilizing existing wind data, depending on geographical location of station, in the direction of energy thought to produce, by using calculated average wind speed of storm which is above the selected wind speed u0, characteristics (Hs; Tm) of the waves of this storm and power (P, W/m) per unit length will be calculated. The duration curves for power, Hs and T, can be obtained. The duration curve represents the occurrence of the parameter (wave height, wave period, wave energy or wave power). It can also be called occurrence curve or availability curve. From these curves, for various percentages of the total storm duration, P, Hs and T’s values can be determined. Also, in the analysis, the shapes of these curves can provide important information about the available wave energy for the selected coasts.

Determination of wind power potential and optimal wind power plant locations in Turkey
Çetinay, Hale; Güven, Ali Nezih; Tör, Osman Bülent; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
Due to increased environmental concerns, utilization of the renewable energy, especially the wind power, gains importance. Like developed countries which have set their renewable energy targets for the long term integration, Turkish government has also set the goal as 20 GW of total wind power installed capacity in 2023. In this thesis, the wind power potential in Turkey is analyzed and different cases are studied to determine optimal locations for wind power plant establishment. In order to determine the w...
Transformation pathways toward a sustainable energy system in Turkey
Fathurrahman, Fahman.; Soytaş, Uğur; Department of Earth System Science (2019)
The important factors for designing and implementing a sustainable energy system consist of a sufficient, affordable, secure, and environmentally sound energy supply along with the efficient use of energy. Given its high dependency on foreign energy resources, the current energy system in Turkey is far from satisfying the criteria of a sustainable energy system. In addition, relying solely on fossil fuels is no longer a proper alternative mainly due to its impact on climate change and vastly diminishing res...
Preliminary Study on Site Selection For Floating Hybrid Wind And Solar Energy Systems In Turkey
Yerlikaya, Nevzat Can; Çakan, Çağatay; Başara, Ilgın; Caceoğlu, Eray; Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan (2021-09-08)
It is well-known that even though fossil fuels are the main energy resource in Turkey, use of sustainable energy resources such as wind and solar energy has been increasing in the past years and expected to continue on this trend in the next years to come. The suitable land for land-based wind turbines and photovoltaic (PV) systems could also be convenient for various other purposes, such as agriculture. This study aims to investigate the suitable sites for a combined floating wind and solar systems in the ...
Assessment of renewable energy based micro-grids for small communities
Sadati, S.M. Sajed; Taylan, Onur; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2016-7)
Deploying renewable energy systems to supply electricity faces many challenges related to cost and variability of the renewable resources. One possible solution to these challenges is to hybridize renewable energy systems with conventional power systems and include energy storage systems. In this study, the feasibility analysis of two cases for electricity generation systems as (i) photovoltaic (PV)-battery-pumped hydro system (PHS) and (ii) PV-wind-battery are presented as a Renewable Energy Micro-Gr...
Renewable Energy Sources: Current Perspectives and Future Prospects in Turkey
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2015-01-01)
Renewable energy offers tremendous benefits for meeting global energy needs. Building on a foundation of hydropower, biomass combustion, and geothermal power pioneered during the industrial revolution, new forms of renewable energy began to be developed and commercialized, including solar, wind, and several forms of advanced bioenergy. Today, the global renewable power capacity has almost reached 200 GW and by 2030, the overall demand for energy resources is expected to almost double the current levels. And...
