Middle East Technical University Central Research Laboratory in nanotechnology , new materials, new processes and biotechnology (METU-CENTER)

2008
This SSA project will improve and strengthen the human and equipment resources of the Middle East Technical University Central Laboratory (METU-CL) in the area of nanotechnology and nanosciences, knowledge based multifunctional materials, new production pr ocesses and devices (NMP), and molecular biology and biotechnology for food quality and safety. This improvement will raise the research capacity of the center to the level of leading research centers in Europe. Major expected results from the project are enhanced participation of METU-CL to European programs mainly to FP6 program and hence more integration to European scientific community, increased scope of the research activities, increased training and education activities. 5 workpackages will be implemented in three years. These workpackages are 1) Dissemination of knowledge; 2) Human resource development : student and expert visits. 3) Management of the project 4) Networking at national and international level. 4) Upgrading the research infra structure of the METU central laboratory. 4 workshops and 4 infodays will be organized to disseminate information and to initiate cooperative activities between METU-CL and other research centers in Europe. Student and expert from the METU-CL will be sen t to leading research centers in Europe to carry out parts of their graduate work and to be trained and educated on certain scientific techniques or instruments. Also experienced scientists and experts from the centers of excellence in Europe will be in vited to METU-CL to give seminars and short courses on specific scientific topic and/or on a specific instrument.

Turkish chemical sectoral innovation system: a case study on R&D centers
Boyacı, Aslı; Pamukçu, M. Teoman.; Department of Science and Technology Policy Studies (2019)
This thesis aims to analyze the innovation landscape of the chemical sector in Turkey through face-to-face interviews with six R&D centers operating in the chemical industry. R&D centers are selected for the case study as they are one of the most critical actors conducting R&D and innovation activities in the sector. The sector was investigated within a set of three sub-sectors as follows: basic chemicals, specialty chemicals, and consumer chemicals. In this thesis, the sectoral innovation system (SIS) appr...
Investigation of the role of a candidate effector of wheat stripe rust pathogen in plant immunity
Dagvadorj, Bayantes; Akkaya, Mahinur S.; Hakkı, Erdoğan Eşref; Department of Biotechnology (2016)
The advanced plant molecular biology and plant biotechnology tools were employed in this thesis, in order to understand the role of a candidate effector, PstSCR1, of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) causing yellow rust disease in wheat. The homologues proteins of PstSCR1 were found to be only conserved in Pst, and in its closest relative, Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt). When PstSCR1 was expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana with its signal peptide (SP), it provoked the plant defense, whereas n...
Isolation and characterization of Taq DNA polymerase and optimization and validation of newly designed thermal cyclers
Yıldız, Lütfiye; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni; Bilecen, Kıvanç; Department of Biotechnology (2011)
Amplification of target DNA in vitro via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a widely used scientific technique in molecular biology. This method relies on repeated heating and cooling cycles of the DNA and enzyme mixture, resulting with the enzymatic replication of the DNA. A heat stable Taq DNA polymerase and a thermal cycler that enables repeated heating/cooling cycles are the two key components of the PCR. In this study we have produced a high activity Taq DNA polymerase and used this enzyme to validate ...
