Particulate matter (PM) is one of the main actors related to air pollution caused by surface mining. Fugitive dust, considered as particulate matter that cannot be collected by conventional measures, is classified by the particle size. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) categorizes PM as coarse and fine particles based on the particle size being less than 10 mu m (PM10) and less than 2.5 mu m (PM2.5). Basic operations of surface mining such as drilling and blasting, loading, haulage, and processing are processes that can potentially generate fugitive dust. Regulations and legislations enforce the mining industry to use environmental monitoring systems, fugitive dust level measured by PM(10)level as part of this. Air quality monitors are positioned at different locations around surface coal mines and track air quality levels during production. This study introduces a data-driven methodology to handle air quality issues related to fugitive dust at surface coal mines. Data is sourced from different mine equipment in real-time and they are integrated with air quality monitoring systems to provide information to support decisions for fugitive dust. The method is implemented and demonstrated in a case study at a large surface coal mine

A preliminary study on the use of reservoir simulation and coal mine ventilation methane measurements in determining coal reservoir properties
Erdoğan, Sinem Setenay; Okandan, Ender; Kracan, Cevat Özgen; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2011)
This thesis investigates methane emissions and methane production potentials from abandoned longwall panels produced or emitted due to mining activities either from coal seam or any underlying or overlying formations. These emissions can increase greenhouse gas concentrations and also pose a danger to the underground working environment and to miners. In addition to the safety issues, recovery and utilization of this gas is an additional source of energy. In this study, methane concentrations measured from ...
THE USE OF CONDUCTIVE NANOMATERIAL-DECORATED FILTERS FOR IMPROVEMENT OF INDOOR AIR QUALITY BY PARTICULATE MATTER FILTRATION
Başköy, Melek Hazal; Bayramoğlu, Tuba Hande; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Environmental Engineering (2022-8-19)
Particulate matter (PM) is one of the six criteria air pollutants that is of greatest concern to air quality. In order to control PM pollution, highly effective air filters are required. The shortcomings of conventional filtration methods have led to the development of effective filtration strategies. In this study, the utilization of two different nanomaterial-decorated nylon mesh filters was investigated. Silver nanowire (Ag NW) and two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene were selected due to the...
A geochemical equilibrium modeling approach to assessing soil acidification impacts due to depositions of industrial air emissions
Ünlü, Kahraman; Soyupak, S; Yurteri, C (1999-07-01)
Soil acidification impacts arising from depositions of industrial air emissions may become a serious environmental concern. Currently, in the literature quantitative mechanistic modeling and the experimental acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) approach and a qualitative evaluation approach classifying soils into various levels of sensitivity to acid additions have been reported to assess the long-term soil acidification impacts due to industrial air emissions. Another alternative quantitative approach proposed...
A Sustainability assessment framework for evaluation of coal mining sector plans in afşin-elbistan coal basin with a special emphasis on land disturbance

The mining sector has negative and positive impacts on the environment, society and economy at the local and national levels. Mitigating and minimizing the negative impacts while maximizing the social and economic benefits of the mining sector are significantly important for contributing to sustainable development in practice. For this purpose, different assessment tools, which can be applied at different decision-making levels, are used in the mining sector and sustainability assessment (SA) is one of thes...
Monitoring and statistical modelling of dust concentration of some Turkish lignites under laboratory conditions
Karakaş, Ahmet; Güyagüler, Tevfik; Department of Mining Engineering (2010)
Although technological developments enable maximum safety, high dust formation is still a crucial problem in coal mining sector. This study is aimed to investigate the relationship between amount of coal dust produced during cutting operation and some important coal properties together with cutting parameters for different particle size ranges in laboratory conditions. For this purpose, six Turkish lignite samples were used in the experiments. Two experiment sets were designed to generate coal dust by using...
