An image based model reconstruction system is described. Real images of a rigid object acquired under a simple but controlled environment are used to recover the three dimensional geometry and the surface appearance. Based on a multi-image calibration method, an algorithm to extract the rotation axis of a turn-table has been developed. Furthermore, this can be extended to estimate robustly the initial bounding volume of the object to be modeled. The coarse volume obtained, is then carved using a stereo correction method which removes the disadvantages of silhouette based reconstruction by photoconsistency. The concept of surface particles is adapted in order to extract a texture map for the model. Some metrics are defined to measure the quality of the reconstructed models.

Iterative Photometric Stereo with Shadow and Specular Region Detection for 3D Reconstruction
BUYUKATALAY, Soner; BİRGÜL, ÖZLEM; Halıcı, Uğur (2009-04-11)
Photometric stereo is a 3D reconstruction algorithm that uses the images of an object with different light conditions and its performance is affected by the shades and specular regions in the images. Especially, the use of Lambert reflectance model results in errors in the reconstructed surface normals. In this study an iterative approach was used to generate masks corresponding to these problematic regions and the surface normals were reconstructed using a Lambert based algorithm that excludes these region...
3D reconstruction of rigid objects from multiple calibrated views
Mülayim, Adem Yaşar; Atalay, Mehmet Volkan; Halıcı, Uğur; Department of Computer Engineering (2003)
In this thesis, an image based three dimensional (3D) model reconstruction system is investigated and the work done for such a complete reconstruction system is presented. Calibrated images of a rigid object, acquired under a simple but controlled environment, are used to recover the 3D object geometry and the surface appereance. Based on a multi-image camera calibration method, an algorithm to define the rotation axis of a turn-table with respect to the fixed camera coordinate frame has been developed. Fur...
Image-based extraction of material reflectance properties of a 3D rigid object
Erdem, ME; Erdem, IA; Yilmaz, UG; Atalay, Mehmet Volkan (2004-01-01)
In this study, an appearance reconstruction method based on extraction of material reflectance properties of a three-dimensional (3D) object from its two-dimensional (2D) images is explained. One of the main advantages of this system is that the reconstructed object can be rendered in real-time with photorealistic quality in varying illumination conditions. The reflectance of the object is decomposed into diffuse and specular components. While the diffuse component is stored in a global texture, the specula...
Silhouette-based 3d reconstruction by energy minimization
Mengi, Emre; Atalay, Mehmet Volkan; Department of Computer Engineering (2003)
To generate a model of an object in the framework of silhouette based recon struction from multiple views, various energy minimization techniques with dif ferent surface representations are used. Initially, original 3D snakes with layered parametric representation is applied. Snake is deformed to minimize an energy functional imposing smoothness and attraction towards 3D surface points de tected from 2D images. Secondly, a representation in spherical coordinates is suggested and the definition of the energy...
