In a previous ultrastructural study, the benefit of a single high dose of vitamin D-3 On fracture healing in a healthy animal model was demonstrated. This study examined the biomechanical consequences of applying a single high dose of vitamin D-3 in a healthy rabbit model subsequent to femoral fracture. The fracture load, the values of energy absorbed until fracture and the flexural rigidity values of the vitamin D group were significantly higher than the corresponding ones of the control group in the case of fracture. On the other hand, for intact bones, those values did not differ significantly between the two groups. It was concluded that single high-dose vitamin D-3 application had positive effects on fracture healing in a healthy animal model, as far as the parameters related to mechanical strength are concerned.

Mechanical design and analysis of a novel fixation device for human bone fractures
Yenigün, Çağrı; Tönük, Ergin; Oğuz, Erbil; Department of Biomedical Engineering (2016)
Fixation of bone fractures over a desired time period is one of the most important requirement for their healing processes. Fracture fixation devices are designed to satisfy particular requirements for different types of bone fractures. Conventional and locking plates, intramedullary rods and screws of trauma surgery, and polyaxial screws, connectors and rods of spinal surgery are the examples of contemporary implants for varying bones and their fractures. The mentioned fixation system is inspired from spin...

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of bone marrow-derived stem cells on consolidation period by using a new biomechanical testing method on sheep mandible model.
Functional evaluation of intraarticular severely comminuted fractures of the calcaneus with gait analysis
BOZKURT, Murat; Kentel, B. Behzat; Yavuzer, Gunes; Öçgüder, Ali; Heycan, Cengiz; Tönük, Ergin (Elsevier BV, 2004-11-01)
Twenty-one patients (23 feet) treated nonsurgically for severely comminuted intraarticular fractures of the calcaneus were evaluated prospectively with a clinical scoring scale and computerized gait analysis. All patients had Sanders type III and type IV fractures. The treatment protocol consisted of no closed reduction, immobilization in removable splint, physiotherapy after edema subsided, and weightbearing after 8 weeks. All patients had a minimum follow-up of 2 years (mean, 38 months). Clinical results ...
Assessment of mineral density and atomic content of fracture callus by quantitative computerized tomography

The mineral density and atomic numbers of elements in the periosteal callus and the cortex area of a healing fracture were measured by quantitative computerized tomography (QCT) to obtain accurate information on the mineralization process in rabbit tibia. The mineral density of the periosteal callus was highest on day 15 and decreased gradually throughout the experiment. This was initially detected by QCT, but not with conventional radiography. An apparent decrease in cortical bone density on days 28 and 42...
Genetic polymorphisms of vitamin D3 metabolizing CYP24A1 and CYP2R1 enzymes in Turkish patients with ischemic stroke

Objective: Vitamin D deficiency is known as an important risk factor in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, which contributes to stroke development. Genetic variations including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in enzymes involved in vitamin D metabolism can affect susceptibility to the development of stroke. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the association between polymorphisms of vitamin D metabolizing enzymes (rs927650 SNP in CYP24A1, and rs10741657 SNP in CYP2R1 genes,) and i...
