The results of an experimental program on punching shear-strengthening of reinforced concrete slab-column connections using carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are presented ill this paper. Externally installed CFRP stirrups serving as shear reinforcement were used as a strengthening technique. The effectiveness of different patterns, detailing, and various amounts of CFRP for strengthening were studied. It was found that the proposed method resulted in punching shear capacity increases up to 60% relative to the specimen without any strengthening. In addition, displacement ductility and postpunching resistance of the strengthened specimens increased, resulting in a more ductile failure mode than that of the control specimen. A design method based oil ACI 318-02 expressions is also presented for this innovative use of CFRP for strengthening slab-column connections.

Joint shear strength prediction for reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections
Unal, Mehmet; Burak Bakır, Burcu (2012-02-10)
In this analytical study numerous prior experimental studies on reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections subjected to cyclic loading are investigated and a database of geometric properties, material strengths, configuration details and test results of subassemblies is established. Considering previous experimental research and employing statistical correlation method, parameters affecting joint shear capacity are determined. Afterwards, an equation to predict the joint shear strength is formed based o...
Behaviour of CFRP confined low strength concrete columns under temperature changes
Erdil, Barış; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Yaman, İsmail Özgür (2012-12-01)
In this study, an experimental program was established to understand the behaviour of FRP-confined low strength cylindrical and square-section concrete columns under temperature changes. The experimental program was divided into four groups. First group of specimens were kept under room temperature and used as control specimens. In the second group, specimens were exposed to predetermined heating-cooling cycles in a specially designed environmental test chamber. Third group of specimens were placed in water...
Estimation of lining thickness around circular shafts
Ozturk, H; Unal, E (2001-06-22)
In this paper, the broken zone developing, around a circular mine shafts and lining pressure is estimated by integrating the results of numerical analysis and the "rock-load height" equation derived from empirical analysis. During numerical modelling studies, the computer program FLAC(2D) was utilized. In order to estimate equivalent Mohr failure Envelope from the generalised Hoek Brown failure criterion, a new FISH function was written within FLAC(2D). Parametric studies were carried out by considering mRM...
Use of granulated blast furnace slag and lime in cement-bentonite slurry wall construction
Talefirouz, D.; Çokça, Erdal; Omer, J. (2016-01-01)
This paper describes an experimental investigation on the use of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and lime as stabilizers for cement-bentonite (CB) slurry used in constructing vertical barrier walls. The primary objective is to develop a blended material, which can reduce the permeability and also enhance the strength of CB slurry walls with a shortened curing time. Mixtures comprising various proportions of cement, bentonite, GGBFS, and lime were prepared and tested for particle size distributi...
Application of computer-aided injection moulding simulation for thermoplastic materials
Onalir, B; Kaftanoglu, B; Balkan, Raif Tuna (1998-01-01)
This paper presents the computer-aided simulation of an injection moulding process for thermoplastic materials. The reasons for using computer simulation for the injection moulding process are discussed together with description of the mould-filling and cooling phenomena. The paper also traces the difficulties in transferring the geometry of the part database from a computer-aided design environment to a computer-aided analysis environment by proposing several solutions for plastic products. Details of simu...
