In this paper, the broken zone developing, around a circular mine shafts and lining pressure is estimated by integrating the results of numerical analysis and the "rock-load height" equation derived from empirical analysis. During numerical modelling studies, the computer program FLAC(2D) was utilized. In order to estimate equivalent Mohr failure Envelope from the generalised Hoek Brown failure criterion, a new FISH function was written within FLAC(2D). Parametric studies were carried out by considering mRMR (modified Rock Mass Rating) values, depth from surface, shaft diameter, ratio of horizontal principal-stresses and uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock. Finally, the computer program, "SHAFT" was also introduced. This program simplifies the lengthy and complex process of shaft-lining design.

Joint shear strength prediction for reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections
Unal, Mehmet; Burak Bakır, Burcu (2012-02-10)
In this analytical study numerous prior experimental studies on reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections subjected to cyclic loading are investigated and a database of geometric properties, material strengths, configuration details and test results of subassemblies is established. Considering previous experimental research and employing statistical correlation method, parameters affecting joint shear capacity are determined. Afterwards, an equation to predict the joint shear strength is formed based o...
DEVELOPMENT OF STRENGTH REDUCTION FACTORS FOR PERFORMANCE-BASED SEISMIC DESIGN OF BRIDGES IN FAR-FAULT SEISMIC REGIONS
Rabaia, Tareq Z. S.; Dicleli, Murat; Department of Engineering Sciences (2021-9)
In this thesis, a methodology to develop strength reduction factors for performance-based seismic design of bridges in far-fault seismic regions is presented. The presented methodology is mainly based on performing linear 5%-damped response spectrum analyses (RSA) and nonlinear time history analyses (NTHA) of bridge piers modeled as single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems. Bridge piers of both circular and rectangular sections are analyzed for wide ranges of various design parameters considering several sub...
Exponential Equation for Predicting Shear Strength Envelope of Unsaturated Soils
Ahmadi Naghadeh, Reza; Toker, Nabi Kartal (2019-07-01)
An exponential equation is introduced to predict the nonlinear variation of shear strength with matric suction for unsaturated soils. The proposed equation involves three constant parameters, two of which are effective shear strength parameters (i.e., phi ' and c '). The third parameter is the maximum capillary cohesion, c '' max, which is the maximum possible increase in shear strength due to matric suction. A procedure for the determination of c '' max from the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is de...
Investigation of unsteady wake-separated boundary layer interaction using particle-image-velocimetry
Uzol, Oğuz; Cranstone, Alex; Hodson, Howard (2007-05-17)
The current paper presents an experimental investigation of the interaction between unsteady wakes and the separated boundary layer on the suction side of an ultra-high-lift low-pressure turbine airfoil. Two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements of the unsteady boundary layer over the T106C LP turbine profile were performed in a low speed linear cascade facility, at selected phases of passing wakes. The wakes are created by moving cylindrical bars across the inlet of the test section. V...
