The main objective of this study is the determination of the slope stability and excavatability category of discontinuous rock exposed between 53 + 000 and 58 + 000 km of the proposed Ankara-Pozanti autoroad in Turkey to provide secure access. The-study area is mostly in the outcrops of highly jointed sandstone with minor layers of marl. This Maastrichtian-Eocene Group also contains conglomerate and limestone bands of flysch character called the Pasadag Group. Quaternary alluvial deposits occur throughout the site. The area was divided into four design sectors based on cut slope locations. Rock slope stability was assessed kinematically as well as through utilizing limit equilibrium analyses. The excavation category was determined to range from hard to extremely hard ripping. Remedial measures for unstable rock slopes are discussed.

Assessment of slope stability in Ankara clay: a case study along E90 highway
Teoman, MB; Topal, Tamer; Isik, NS (2004-05-01)
Some slope instability problems exist in Ankara clay along E90 highway. The purpose of this paper is to determine the mineralogical and geotechnical properties of soils, and to investigate the causes and mechanisms of three rotational landslides along a section of the highway. In order to accomplish these tasks, field studies, laboratory testing, back analyses, and limit equilibrium and finite difference analyses were performed. The landslides are formed within a soil consisting of clay and silt with a litt...
Investigation of the failure mechanism and stabilization of a landslide in weathered tuffite, Giresun, northeastern Turkey
Avsar, Ozgur; Akgün, Haluk; Kockar, Mustafa Kerem (2014-11-01)
This study investigates the causes and failure mechanism of the Aksu landslide that occurred during the construction of the Giresun-Espiye road between KM: 1 + 030-1 + 170 in northern Turkey and recommends proper stabilization techniques. For the purpose of investigating the causes and mechanism of this slope failure, engineering geological mapping, geotechnical investigation and rock mass characterization were performed. From top to bottom, weathered tuffite, tuffite, flysch, and dacitic tuffite were the m...
Stability analyses of a highway embankment slope failed during Düzce earthquake
Keklikoğlu, Ebru; Bakır, Sadık; Department of Civil Engineering (2002)
In this study, the slope failure of Bakacak during 1999 Düzce earthquake at Bolu Mountain Crossing on Ankara - Istanbul state highway is studied. First, soil parameters at the time of failure are investigated based on laboratory tests and back analyses. Then, these parameters are used to calculate the factor of safety of the slope employing two different methods, namely, limit equilibrium and c-<J) reduction in stress-deformation analyses. Finite difference method is utilized in stress-deformation analyses....
Assessment of slope stability for a segment (km: 25+600-26+000) of Antalya-Korkuteli highway
Arıkan, Huriye Aslı; Topal, Tamer; Department of Geological Engineering (2010)
The cut slopes at a segment between Km 25+600 and 26+000 of the Antalya-Burdur Breakaway-Korkuteli State Road to be newly constructed have slope instability problems due to the existence of highly jointed limestone. The purpose of this study is to investigate the engineering geological properties of the units exposed at three cut slopes, to assess stability of the cut slopes, and to recommend remedial measures for the problematic sections. In this respect, both field and laboratory studies have been carried...
