The main purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of 5E learning cycle model based instruction and traditionally designed chemistry instruction on 10th grade students' understanding of state of matter and solubility concepts. In this study, 119 tenth grade students from chemistry courses instructed by same teacher from an Anatolian High School in Ankara, Turkey took part. This study included two groups which were randomly assigned as experimental and control groups. During teaching the topic state of matter and solubility concepts, students were taught with instruction based on 5E learning cycle model in experimental group while students in control group were taught with the traditional instruction. The results revealed that 5E learning cycle model caused significantly better acquisition of the scientific conceptions related to state of matter and solubility concepts than traditional instruction.

The main purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of instruction based on 5E learning cycle model over traditionally designed chemistry instruction on tenth grade students2 understanding of acid-base concepts. Fifty- six tenth grade students from two classes of a chemistry course taught by the same teacher in Atatürk Anatolian High School 2003-2004 spring semester were enrolled in the study. The classes were randomly assigned as control and experimental groups. Students in the control group we...
Facilitating Conceptual Change in Rate of Reaction Concepts Using Conceptual Change Oriented Instruction
KAYA, EBRU; Geban, Ömer (2012-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of conceptual change-oriented instruction through demonstrations (CCOITD) on 11th grade students' understanding of rate of reaction concepts when compared to traditionally designed chemistry instruction (TDCI). The sample consisted of 69 11th grade students from two classes in a public high school. Reaction Rate Concept Test was administered to both groups as a pretest and posttest to assess students' understanding of the concepts. The data was analyz...
Facilitating Conceptual Change in Gases Concepts
Cetin, Pinar Seda; Kaya, Ebru; Geban, Ömer (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2009-04-01)
The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of conceptual change oriented instruction (CCOI) over traditionally designed chemistry instruction (TDCI) on overcoming 10th grade students' misconceptions on gases concepts. In addition, the effect of gender difference on students' understanding of gases concepts was investigated. The subjects of this study consisted of 74 10th grade students from two chemistry classes. One of the classes was assigned as experimental group and the other group was as...
