In this study, a new cycle counting method is developed to determine the number and amplitude of large and small displacement/strain cycles. A new equation is obtained to determine a displacement/strain cycle amplitude representative of a number of small amplitude cycles existing in a typical temperature induced displacement/strain history in steel H-piles of integral bridges. The effect of primary and secondary small cycles are investigated for different integral bridges

Development of a quadtree based agglomeration method for a multigrid viscous flow solver on unstructured grids
Mahmutyazicioglu, Emel; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Aksel, Haluk (null; 2010-12-13)
In this study, a new cell agglomeration technique is developed and applied to 1st and 2nd order inviscid/viscous multigrid flow solutions on unstructured/hybrid grids. The grid coarsening required by the multigrid scheme is achieved by agglomerating the unstructured/hybrid cells based on their distribution on a quadtree data structure. The paper presents the coarsening strategy and the multigrid adaptation on inviscid/viscous 2D solutions over a NACA 0012 airfoil section. It is shown that, the quadtree base...
Developing regional flow duration curves and evaluating the performances in the ungauged basins
Kocatepe, Yaprak; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
A flow duration curve (FDC) defines the relation between the flow amount of any time (daily, yearly, or another time) and its frequency. Moreover, FDCs are used in many water resources projects. However, the ungauged basins or limited amount of gauging in a basin is a common problem. Therefore, regional FDCs are needed to be developed in ungauged basins. Oltu basin has been chosen as the study area, which is located in the north-eastern part of Turkey in Çoruh Basin. Two parametric approaches and a statisti...
A unifying grid approach for solving potential flows applicable to structured and unstructured grid configurations
Cete, A. Ruhsen; Yuekselen, M. Adil; Kaynak, Uenver (Elsevier BV, 2008-01-01)
In this study, an efficient numerical method is proposed for unifying the structured and unstructured grid approaches for solving the potential flows. The new method, named as the "alternating cell directions implicit - ACDI", solves for the structured and unstructured grid configurations equally well. The new method in effect applies a line implicit method similar to the Line Gauss Seidel scheme for complex unstructured grids including mixed type quadrilateral and triangle cells. To this end, designated al...
Development of an all speed navier-stokes preconditioner for two and three dimensional flows on hybrid grids
Baş, Onur; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
In this study, a novel Mach uniform preconditioning method is developed for the solution of Euler/Navier-Stokes equations at subsonic and incompressible flow conditions. In contrast to the methods developed earlier in which the conservation of mass equation is preconditioned, the conservation of energy equation is preconditioned in the present method to enforce the divergence free constraint on the velocity field even at the limiting case of incompressible, zero Mach number flows. The proposed Mach-uniform ...
Implementation of rotation into a 2-d euler solver
Özdemir, Enver Doruk; Aksel, Mehmet Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
The aim of this study is to simulate the unsteady flow around rotating or oscillating airfoils. This will help to understand the rotor aerodynamics, which is essential in turbines and propellers. In this study, a pre-existing Euler solver with finite volume method that is developed in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University (METU) is improved. This structured pre-existing code was developed for 2-D internal flows with Lax-Wendroff scheme. The improvement consist of firstly,...
