The purpose of this study was to develop a measuring tool in order to form teaching materials that can be used in Bridging Analogy Based Instruction (BABI). it would be possible not only to find out new anchoring and bridging analogies, but also to use and investigate the analogies offered in the related literature with this test named as Force Diagnostic Test (FDT). The details of the whole procedure related to the development of the FDT such as selection of the misconceptions, determination of the number of items, format of the test, and non-structured interviews were explained in this study in detailed. Final version of the FDT was applied to 148 students of two different universities in Ankara. Students' answers, confidence levels, and their explanations for causes of their answers were investigated by considering each question in the test individually. In the light of all these data, the importance of FDT and its contributions to BABI were discussed.

İpek, İnciser; Kondakçı, Esen; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2007)
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of the conceptual change oriented instruction using hands-on activities and traditionally designed chemistry instruction on 10th grade students’ understanding of gases concept. Also, the effect of instruction on students’ attitude toward chemistry as a school subject was investigated. The sample of the study consisted of 59 tenth grade students from two chemistry classes in a public high school. This study was conducted during the 2006-2007 fall sem...
The effect of context based instruction on 9th grade students' understanding of cleaning materials topic and their attitude toward environment
Elmas, Rıdvan; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of context based instruction over traditionally designed chemistry instruction on 9th grade students’ understanding of cleaning materials topic and their attitudes toward environment. Moreover students’ science process skills were measured for using as a covariate. Participants were 222 ninth grade students from eight classes in two different types of high schools in Ankara. Experimental group students were instructed with context based instr...
The Effect of multiple intelligences based instruction on students's achievement in basic compounds of living organisms concepts and attitude toward biology
Şakir, Tuncay; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2013)
The main purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of multiple intelligences based instruction (MIBI) over traditionally designed instruction on ninth grade students’ achievement in the unit of basic compounds of living organisms concepts and attitude toward biology as a school subject. In addition, the effect of gender difference on achievement in the unit and attitudes toward biology were investigated. Students’ science process skills were also investigated. 59 ninth grade students from two d...
An evaluation of the environmental literacy of preservice teachers in Turkey through Rasch analysis
Teksöz, Gaye; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Öztekin, Ceren (Informa UK Limited, 2014-03-04)
The purpose of this study was to make use of proposed definitions of environmental literacy to (1) guide the application of Rasch analysis and (2) utilize the developed instrumentation to further inform the work of environmental educators. A total of 2311 preservice teachers attending Faculty of Education departments of four public universities located in the capital city of Turkey provided data for this study. The instrument used included a knowledge scale, an attitude scale, an attitude towards environmen...
Effect of conceptual change oriented instruction accompanied with cooperative group work on understanding of acid-base concepts
Ayhan, Arzu; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2004)
The main purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of conceptual change oriented instruction accompanied with cooperative group work and traditionally designed instruction for removing misconceptions related to acid-base concepts. In this study 33 tenth grade students from two classes from METU Development Foundation Private School in the spring semester of 2003-2004 participated. There were two groups in the study. Students in experimental group received conceptual change oriented instruction ...
