The purpose of this study is to describe teachers' knowledge about their students' algebraic thinking and to determine to what extent this knowledge essentially reflects students' ways of thinking. Three mathematics teachers and their 49 ninth grade students were selected as participants. In this study, students' algebraic thinking was determined through a generalization activity and then the teachers' knowledge and expectations were investigated. The data were comprised of students' worksheets and the interviews with the teachers. The results indicated that there was a considerable difference between students' actual ways of algebraic thinking and the teacher's expectations. However, it was also revealed that the teachers were able to better understand students' ways of thinking after examining their students' worksheets carefully.

PRESERVICE TEACHERS' KNOWLEDGE OF STUDENTS' COGNITIVE PROCESSES ABOUT THE DIVISION OF FRACTIONS
Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç (2008-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to examine preservice mathematics teachers' knowledge about common (mis)conceptions and difficulties of elementary students. In addition, it Was aimed to investigate preservice teachers' knowledge about the possible sources of these misconception/difficulties, and their suggested strategies to overcome those difficulties. Data was collected from senior preservice elementary mathematics teachers enrolled in a teacher education program at a public university at the end of the spr...
Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching the Function Concept and Student Learning Outcomes
Hatisaru, Vesife; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2017-04-01)
The purpose of this study was to examine the potential interrelationships between teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) the function concept and their students' learning outcomes of this concept. Data were collected from two teachers teaching in a vocational high school and their students through a function concept test for teachers and students, follow-up interviews with teachers, and classroom observations. Findings indicated that teachers' MKT and students' learning outcomes were related to...
Teachers’ knowledge of content and students about the functıon concept and ıts ınterrelatıon wıth student learnıng outcomes ın vocatıonal hıgh schools
Hatisaru, Vesife; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Korkmaz, Belgin; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2013)
The present study aimed to identify the teachers’ knowledge of content and students in vocational high schools, and investigate the patterns of interrelation between teachers’ knowledge of content and students, and their students’ learning outcomes with respect to one of the most challenging concepts in secondary school mathematics curriculum, the function concept. To achieve the former, a questionnaire was administered to 42 teachers to identify their knowledge of content and students about the function co...
Investigating perceptions of preservice mathematics teachers on their technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) regarding geometry
Bulut, Aykut; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The aim of this study is to investigate perceptions of preservice mathematics teachers’ technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) regarding geometry. In addition, the purpose is to examine the relationships among the components of TPACK. Moreover, possible gender and year of enrollment differences related to preservice mathematics teachers’ technological pedagogical content knowledge dimensions are examined. This research study has been conducted with 780 preservice mathematics teachers who are en...
Pre-Service Teachers’ Knowledge Regarding the Area of Triangle
Durmaz, Asli Bilik; Işıksal Bostan, Mine (2022-04-01)
The aim of this study is to investigate the knowledge of pre-service middle school mathematics teachers on possible misconceptions and difficulties held by students regarding the area of triangle. In line with this aim, qualitative case study research design was used to obtain deep information. As the participants of the study, two pre-service middle school teachers were chosen purposively. Data were collected from lesson plans, semi-structured interviews and observations of pre-service teachers’ related le...
