In this study, the performance of soft-computing methodologies and the conventional controllers are compared for the control of a servo system. A number of approaches in both domains are simulated and their performances are assessed in terms of several performance measures. It is seen that the use of soft computing methodologies result in some desirable characteristics.

Comparison of position controllers designed for an elastic system using its complete and deficient dynamic models
Özgören, Mustafa Kemal (2010-01-01)
This article is concerned with comparing the position controllers designed for an elastic system using its complete and deficient dynamic models. The system considered here as an application example consists of three rotors connected with two elastic shafts. Three kinds of controller are designed and compared. Controller-3 is designed using the complete dynamic model of the system. Therefore, it works perfectly, satisfying all the specified requirements. Controller-2 is designed based on a deficient model t...
Comparison of Matrix Converter Induction Motor Drive Control Methods
Lettl, Jiri; Kuzmanovic, Dragan; Fligl, Stanislav (2011-09-10)
In this paper, the implementation of the Field Oriented Control and the Direct Torque Control in matrix converter supplied induction motor drives is analysed, and compared with the implementation in drives supplied by the Voltage Source Inverter. The analysis is accompanied by the results of numerical simulations and experimental implementations of these two control methods.
Model Predictive control(MPC)performance for controlling reaction systems
Aşar, Işık; Özgen, Canan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2004)
In this study, the performance of the Model Predictive Controller (MPC) algorithm is investigated in two different reaction systems. The first case is a saponification reaction system where ethyl acetate reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium acetate and ethanol in a CSTR. In the reactor, temperature and sodium acetate concentration are controlled by manipulating the flow rates of ethyl acetate and cooling water. The model of the reactor is developed considering first principal models. The experimen...
Modeling and experimental evaluation of variable speed pump and valve controlled hydraulic servo drives
Çalışkan, Hakan; Balkan, Raif Tuna; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
In this thesis study, a valveless hydraulic servo system controlled by two pumps is investigated and its performance characteristics are compared with a conventional valve controlled system both experimentally and analytically. The two control techniques are applied on the position control of a single rod linear actuator. In the valve controlled system, the flow rate through the actuator is regulated with a servovalve; whereas in the pump controlled system, two variable speed pumps driven by servomotors reg...
