In this study, the performance of the Model Predictive Controller (MPC) algorithm is investigated in two different reaction systems. The first case is a saponification reaction system where ethyl acetate reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium acetate and ethanol in a CSTR. In the reactor, temperature and sodium acetate concentration are controlled by manipulating the flow rates of ethyl acetate and cooling water. The model of the reactor is developed considering first principal models. The experiments are done to obtain steady state data from the reaction system and these are compared with the model outputs to find the unknown parameters of the model. Then, the developed model is used for designing SISO and MIMO-MPC considering Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) technique for coupling. The second case is the reaction system used for the production of boric acid by the reaction of colemanite and sulfuric acid in four CSTR̕s connected in series. In the reactor, the boric acid concentration in the fourth reactor is controlled by manipulating the sulfuric acid flow rate fed to the reactor. The transfer functions of the process and disturbance (colemanite flow rate) are obtained experimentally by giving step changes to the manipulated variable and to the disturbance. A model-based and constrained SISO-MPC is designed utilizing linear step response coefficients. The designed controllers are tested for performance in set point tracking, disturbance rejection and robustness issues for the two case studies. It is found that, they are satisfactory except in robustness issues for disturbance rejection in boric acid system.

Artificial neural network estimator design for the inferential model predictive control of an industrial distillation column
Bahar, A; Özgen, Canan; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal; Halıcı, Uğur (2004-09-15)
An inferential control methodology, that utilizes an artificial neural network (ANN) estimator for a model predictive controller (MPC), is developed for an industrial multicomponent distillation column. In the control of product compositions by a feedback control system, because of the difficulty of on-line measurements of compositions, temperature measurements can be utilized. The selection of the temperature measurement points for the inferential control is done by the help of singular value decomposition...
An empirical method for the second viral coefficients of non-standard fluids
Kis, Konrad; Orbey, Hasan (Elsevier BV, 1989-9)
A new empirical method is proposed for the extension of Pitzer-Curl type correlations of the second virial coefficient to non-standard fluids as define
FINITE VOLUME SIMULATION OF 2-D STEADY SQUARE LID DRIVEN CAVITY FLOW AT HIGH REYNOLDS NUMBERS
YAPICI, KERİM; Uludağ, Yusuf (FapUNIFESP (SciELO), 2013-10-01)
In this work, computer simulation results of steady incompressible flow in a 2-D square lid-driven cavity up to Reynolds number (Re) 65000 are presented and compared with those of earlier studies. The governing flow equations are solved by using the finite volume approach. Quadratic upstream interpolation for convective kinematics (QUICK) is used for the approximation of the convective terms in the flow equations. In the implementation of QUICK, the deferred correction technique is adopted. A non-uniform st...
Numerical simulation of laminar reaction flows
Tarhan, Tanıl; Selçuk, Nevin; Department of Chemical Engineering (2004)
Novel sequential and parallel computational fluid dynamic (CFD) codes based on method of lines (MOL) approach were developed for the numerical simulation of multi-component reacting flows using detailed transport and thermodynamic models. Both codes were applied to the prediction of a confined axisymmetric laminar co-flowing methane-air diffusion flame for which experimental data were available in the literature. Flame-sheet model for infinite-rate chemistry and one-, two-, and five- and ten-step reduced fi...
Chiral seperations by enzyme enhanced ultrafiltration : fractionation ofracemic benzoin
Ölçeroğlu, Ayşe Hande; Yılmaz, Levent; Department of Chemical Engineering (2006)
In this study, a methodology for separation of chiral molecules, by using enhanced ultrafiltration system was developed. Benzoin was the model chiral molecule studied. In the scope of developing this methodology, some parameters were investigated in the preliminary ultrafiltration experiments in order to set the operation conditions for enhanced ultrafiltration experiments. Due to the slight solubility of benzoin in pure water, 15% (v/v) Polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) and 30 % (v/v) Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)...
