The Lapta Group, Late Cretaceous-Middle Eocene in age, mainly consists of basal breccias, micritic limestones and clayey limestones with volcanic, calciturbidite and breccia interbeds. It unconformably overlies the Triassic-Lower Cretaceous platform carbonates in the Besparmak (Kyrenia) Range. The detailed study of planktonic foraminiferal assemblages obtained from three stratigraphic sections through the Lapta Group revealed six biozones: Racemiguembelina fructicosa Zone and Abathomphalus mayaroensis Zone of Maastrichtian age; and Acarinina uncinata Zone (P2), Morozovella angulata Zone (P3), Globanomalina pseudomenardii Zone (P4) and Morozovella velascoensis Zone (P5) of Paleocene age. The Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary and the lower part of the Danian including Guembelitria cretacea (P0), Pamtlarugoglobigerina eugubina (Pa) and Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina-Praemurcia uncinata (P1) zones have not been recorded. Absence of this interval has been attributed to the volcanic level between micritic limestones and clayey limestones in the lower part of the sequence. The clayey limestones of the Lapta Group are overlain by radiolarian calcareous mudstones which pass into alternating siltstone and sandstone of the Ardahan Formation. In contrast to the Lapta Group, the Ardahan Formation lacks zonal marker species and is characterized generally by poorly preserved, less diverse and less abundant planktonic foraminiferal assemblages which hamper biozonation. However, the occurrences of typical Middle Eocene planktonic foraminiferal taxa such as Acarinina bullbrooki (Bolli), Globigerinatheka kugleri (Bolli, Loeblich and Tappan), Globigerinatheka subconglobata (Shutskaya), Morozovella spinulosa (Cushman), Morozovella lehneri (Cushman and Jarvis), Truncorotaloides topilensis (Cushman) and Truncorotaloides rohri Bronnimann and Bermudez together with Turborotalia cerroazulensis cerroazulensis (Cole) and Globorotaloides suteri Bolli suggest a Bartonian age for the Ardahan Formation.

Upper Cretaceous volcaniclastic complexes and calcareous plankton biostratigraphy in the Western Pontides, NW Turkey
Boehm, Katharina; Wagreich, Michael; Wolfgring, Erik; Tuysuz, Okan; Gier, Susanne; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer (2019-01-01)
This study describes and interprets Upper Cretaceous volcaniclastics interbedded with hemipelagic to pelagic limestones, marls, and turbidites from the Western Pontides, northwestern Turkey. The Derekey Formation, the Unaz Formation (red pelagic limestone unit), and the Cambu Formation can be distinguished, overlain by the turbiditic Akveren Formation. Biostratigraphic ages from the predominantly volcaniclastic Derekoy Formation indicate Turonian (Dicarinella concavata planktonic foraminifera zone, CC13/UC8...
Late Middle Jurassic (Late Bathonian-early Callovian) radiolarian cherts from the Neotethyan Bornova flysch zone, Spil Mountains, Western Turkey
TEKİN, UĞUR KAĞAN; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2009-06-01)
Alternating radiolarian cherts and mudstones associated with basaltic lavas occur in a olistolith within the Late Cretaceous Bornova Flysch in W Anatolia. Cherts yielded diverse and moderately preserved, Nassellaria-dominated radiolarian faunas of late Bathonian-early Callovian age. Associated volcanic rocks are geochemically classified as remnants of oceanic seamounts. This is so far the first late Middle Jurassic age from the crust of the Neotethyan Izmir-Ankara Ocean in W Anatolia, and suggests that its ...
Extinction, survival, and recovery of lagenide foraminifers in the permian-triassic boundary interval, central Taurides, Turkey
Groves, JR; Altıner, Demir; Rettori, R (2005-07-01)
The assemblage of lagenide foraminifers in uppermost Permian rocks of the central Taurides consists of 22 species ill 16 genera. including the new species Rectostipulina pentamerata, plus additional unidentified elements. Of these, only two identifiable species in "Nodosaria" and indeterminate syzraniids survived the end-Permian mass extinction. The last occurrences of most taxa fall within the upper half-meter of the Permian System, a pattern consistent with abrupt extinction when tested for the Signor-Lip...
Late Cretaceous stratigraphy in the Mudurnu-Goynuk Basin (Turkey) and inferences on sea-level change in the Late Campanian to Early Maastrichtian
Wolfgring, Erik; Wagreich, Michael; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Liu Shasha, Liu Shasha; Boehm, Katharina (Geological Society of London, 2020-01-01)
Upper Cretaceous strata at Goynuk, northwestern Anatolia, Turkey, provide a geological record of the Campanian-Maastrichtian from the Sakarya Terrane along the active Neotethys margin. Shales and shaly marls with siliciclastic and volcaniclastic intercalations indicate a pelagic palaeoenvironment rich in planktonic and benthonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossil assemblages. A composite record from the Campanian to the Maastrichtian records nannofossil standard zones UC15c (CC21) to UC20a (CC26) as we...
High-resolution sequence stratigraphic correlation in the Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian)-Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) peritidal carbonate deposits (Western Taurides, Turkey)
Altıner, Demir; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Bayazitoglu, M; Gaziulusoy, ZE (1999-01-01)
Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian)- Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) inner platform carbonates in the Western Taurides are composed of metre-scale upward-shallowing cyclic deposits (parasequences) and important karstic surfaces capping some of the cycles. Peritidal cycles (shallow subtidal facies capped by tidal-Aat laminites or fenestrate limestones) are regressive- and transgressive-prone (upward-deepening followed by upward-shallowing facies trends). Subtidal cycles are of two types and indicate incomplete shall...
