In this study, we propose a new method for analyzing and representing the distribution of discriminative information for data acquired via functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). For this purpose, we form a spatially local mesh with varying size, around each voxel, called the seed voxel. The relationship among each seed voxel and its neighbors is estimated using a linear regression model by minimizing the square error. Then, we estimate the optimal mesh size that represents the connections among each seed voxel and its surroundings by minimizing Akaike's Final Prediction Error (FPE) with respect to the mesh size. The degree of locality is represented by the optimum mesh size. Our results indicate that the local mesh size with the highest discriminative power varies across individual participants. The proposed method was tested on an fiMRI study consisting of item recognition (IR) and judgment of recency (JOR) tasks. For each participant, the estimated arc weights of each local mesh with different mesh size are used to classify the type of memory judgment (i.e.IR or JOR). Classification accuracy for each participant was derived using k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) method. The results indicate that the proposed local mesh model with optimal mesh size can successfully represent discriminative information for neuroimaging data.

Recognition of the the cognitive states by using functional Magnetic Rezonans Imaging (fMRI) data is a challenging problem that has been a focus of scientific research for a long time. In this study the effectiveness of clustering and the ensemble learning techniques on fMRI dataset is investigated and different paramaters are compared. Moreover, the performance of these techniques are tested on both raw voxel intensity values and meshes formed by multiple voxels. Clusters are compared to the functional bra...

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) methods produce high dimensional representation of cognitive processes under heavy noise due to the limitations of hardware and measurement techniques. In order to reduce the noise and extract useful information from the fMRI data, a sequence of pre-processing techniques, such as smoothing with spatial filters and z-scoring, are used. In this study, we suggest an additional normalization technique based upon a statistical property of fMRI data. We, first, define ...

In this thesis, we propose novel representations to extract discriminative information in functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data for cognitive state and gender classification. First, we model the local relationship among a set of fMRI time series within a neighborhood by considering temporal information obtained from all measurements in time series. The estimated local relationships, called Mesh Arc Descriptors (MADs), are employed to represent information in fMRI data. Second, we adapt encoding ...
