In this study, the photovoltaic properties of poly(triphenylamine-thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole) alternating copolymer dye in bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells were examined. The copolymer is a red colored dye material with high thermal stability, good solubility and low-band gap energy. The band gap energy of the polymer was determined as 1.36 eV. The conductivity of the polymer thin film was measured as 1.5x10(-5) S/cm. The polymer solar cells were fabricated using the different ratios of the blends of the polymer and [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester and their photovoltaic properties were investigated. The optimum polymer solar cell yielded the short circuit current of 4.10 mA/cm(2), the open-circuit voltage of 0.47 V, the fill factor of 29% and the power conversion efficiency of 0.55%. The polymer solar cell showed the maximum incident photon to current efficiency of 14.5% at 470 nm. The copolymer can be considered as a promising solar cell dye material.

Photovoltaic performance of bifacial dye sensitized solar cell using chemically healed binary ionic liquid electrolyte solidified with SiO2 nanoparticles
Cosar, Burak; Icli, Kerem Cagatay; Yavuz, Halil Ibrahim; Özenbaş, Ahmet Macit (2013-01-01)
In this study, we investigated the effect of electrolyte composition, photoanode thickness, and the additions of GuSCN (guanidinium thiocyanate), NMB (N-methylbenimidazole), and SiO2 on the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs (dye sensitized solar cells). A bifacial DSSC is realized and irradiated from front and rear sides. The devices give maximum photovoltaic efficiencies for 70% PMII (1-propyl-3-methyl-imidazolium iodide)/30% (EMIB(CN)(4)) (1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetracyanoborate) electrolyte composi...
Polymer light emitting diodes and organic solar cells towards ito free devices and high efficiency devices using electrochemically synthesized polymers /
Hızalan Özsoy, Gönül; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2017)
In this study, polymer based solar cells and polymer based light emitting diodes were constructed. In the third and fourth chapters of this study, effect of terminal units and effect of molecular weight on electroluminescence and photovoltaic properties were investigated. Triphenyl end capped polymer P1 based PLED shows luminance value of 10411cd/m2 at 8.5V whereas benzene end capped polymer P2 based PLED has the peak luminance value of 14583cd/m2 at 8V. P2 based photovoltaic devices exhibited superior perf...
Photovoltaic properties of benzotriazole containing alternating donor–acceptor copolymers: Effect of alkyl chain length
Baran, Derya; Balan, Abidin; Stubhan, Tobias; Ameri, Tayebeh; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Brabec, Christoph J. (Elsevier BV, 2012-12)
A series of variable alkyl chain length substituted donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers with thiophene ring as the donor and benzotriazole moiety as the acceptor has been investigated in bulk heterojunction solar cells. The optical and electrochemical properties showed that the absorption onsets and the energy levels of the copolymers were not affected by alkyl substitution revealing 1.9 eV of optical band gap. The morphologies of the blend film can be fine-tuned by increasing the chain length attached...
Contact resistivity analysis of different passivation layers via transmission line method measurements
Kökbudak, Gamze; Turan, Raşit; Yerci, Selçuk; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2017)
Crystalline silicon (c-Si) homojunction solar cells constitute over 90% of the current photovoltaic market. Although the standard solar cells are cost effective and easy to process, their efficiency potential is unfortunately limited. Currently, more innovative cell concepts appeared with their high efficiency potential coupled with low costs. Since the recombination at surfaces and under metal contacts is one of the major obstacles against high conversion efficiencies, surface passivation has primary impor...
CONJUGATED POLYMERS AND ORGANIC CATIONS FOR OPTOELECTRONIC APPLICATIONS
Yaşa, Mustafa; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Arslan Udum, Yasemin; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2022-1-27)
There are several studies on organic solar cells based on conjugated polymers in literature, and various new materials are being designed. The Donor-Acceptor approach has been the most common approach for designing and synthesizing conjugated polymers. In this study, thienopyrroledione bearing conjugated polymers were synthesized via Stille and Suzuki polycondensation reactions. In the first part of this thesis, the polymers obtained via Stille polycondensation were employed to fabricate organic solar cells...
