© 2019 SPIE.Comparison of atmospheric transmission in the bands ranging from terahertz (THz) to infrared (IR) bands using MODTRAN and available literature data show that THz radiation is not dramatically attenuated in adverse conditions when compared to IR bands especially at long distances. Favorable THz bands and mechanisms for detection of low IR signature target under adverse conditions in these bands are determined. In this study, a set of experiments are conducted to compare THz detection mechanisms, which are THz detectors and IR microbolometer cameras. Typically, IR Microbolometer cameras are not sensitive enough to detect THz waves and their sensitivity needs to be improved. While THz microbolometer cameras are being continuously improved the use of a THz to IR converter intermediary component allows a cost-effective solution to the problem. A THz to IR converter based on a metasurface absorber is studied in this regard. The effectiveness of the device is simulated and the temperature difference that can be detected with the IR microbolometer camera is modeled based on heat transfer equations.

Analysis of the Interaction between THz Waves and Low Cost Plasma Detectors for the Development of Stand-Off Imaging Systems
Pavia, J P; Ribeiro, Marco; Kuşoğlu Sarıkaya, Cemre; Altan, Hakan; AKBAR, DEMİRAL; Souto, N (2020-06-16)
Over the past few years, the Terahertz (THz) band has been seen as quite promising in fields of spectroscopy and imaging. Most of the current manufacturing methods for THz emission and detection devices are limited due to the associated cost and complexity, therefore alternative ways have been sought driven by the availability of new technologies. From recent research in the field of imaging, commercially available Glow Discharge Detectors (GDDs) have been found to be an interesting solution because of thei...
Application of Si Nanowires Fabricated by Metal-Assisted Etching to Crystalline Si Solar Cells
KULAKCI, Mustafa; ES, FIRAT; ÖZDEMİR, Baris; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Turan, Raşit (2013-01-01)
Reflection and transmission through a solar cell can be significantly reduced using light-trapping structures. This approach can be applied to both crystalline and thin-film solar cells to improve the light absorption and conversion efficiency of the cell. In this study, vertically aligned Si nanowires were fabricated over a large area via a metal-assisted etching technique. Following a detailed parametric study, nanowires were applied to industrial-size (156 mm x 156 mm) Si solar cells. The reflectivity fr...
Fabrication of silicon carbide-on-silcon based devices for effective near-field thermal radiation transfer
Elçioğlu, Elif Begüm; Okutucu Özyurt, Hanife Tuba; Mengüç, M. Pınar; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2018)
Near-field radiative transfer (NFRT) has attracted attention due to the potential of obtaining improved amount of heat transfer between media separated by distances comparable to or smaller than the dominant wavelength of emission. Such potential has been demonstrated in vacuum environments to form the basis of mainly near-field thermophotovoltaic systems and further, conversion into electricity with high system efficiency. In this thesis, an analytical analysis is performed to gain insight on nearfield rad...
Metamaterial Inspired Electrically Small GSM Antenna with Steerable Radiation Patterns and High Radiation Efficiency
Türkmen. Öznur; Sayan, Gönül; ZİOLKOWSKİ, RW (2013-07-13)
In this study, metamaterial inspired, electrically small, single band antennas with steerable radiation patterns and high radiation efficiencies are proposed. Three different antenna structures having their maximum directivities in the vertical (Antenna A), diagonal (Antenna B) and horizontal (Antenna C) directions are presented and their simulated performance characteristics are reported. These antennas, which consist of a coax-fed printed monopole and a capacitively loaded loop (CLL) as a near-field reson...
Optimization of a microbolometer pixel for operation in the sub-1 THz region
Demirörs, Oytun; Atik, Bahar; Dirican, Emrah; Altan, Hakan; Esentürk, Okan; Ylldlrlm, Mustafa; Akın, Tayfun (2021-01-01)
Imaging in the Terahertz (THz) region has drawn attention in recent years, but the nature of the THz frequency regime causes some drawbacks in imaging such as long wavelength, high cost, and low emission levels at room temperature. Because of the high atmospheric absorption of THz waves, fabrication of a microbolometer pixel that works in the sub-1 THz frequency regime is necessary. Large pixel pitches due to longer wavelengths and the resulting higher thermal mass pose a difficult challenge. Due to those l...
