GENERAL THERMODYNAMIC TREATMENT OF AMMONIUM-CHLORIDE SYSTEM CLOSE TO PHASE-TRANSITIONS

1986-03-01
In ammonium halides the optical and acoustical phonons may be represented by the Einstein and Debye models. Close to the λ-phase-transition, the model for the lattice vibrations in these crystals requires an extra component which can be described by an Ising model. In this study we have developed an Ising model superimposed on an Einstein and/or Debye model and have applied it to the NH4Cl system. In this application we have used the Raman frequency of the ν5(174cm−1) phonon of NH4Cl to characterize the corresponding Einstein and Debye frequency for this crystal system. Thus from our observed frequencies for the 174cm−1 (TO) mode we have obtained an approximation for the lattice vibrational contribution to the specific heat Cy of NH4Cl. The critical behaviour of the specific heat has been obtained for the Ising model, since the Einstein or Debye model is considered to show no anomaly in Cv near the phase transition. The predicted values are close to observed Cp data but differ significantly from the only observed Cv data available, (Sakamoto, 1954) It is suggested that the observed Cy data is unreliable in the vicinity of the λ-transition. The present model, or modifications of it should be capable of giving quite precise descriptions of the thermodynamic properties of solids close to second-order (or nearly second-order) phase transitions.

Mass spectrometric study of negative ions from unsaturated carbonyls
Hacaloğlu, Jale; Gökmen, Ali; Baumgartel, H. (1989-01-01)
Negative ion formation from some unsaturated carbonyl derivatives is investigated as a function of electron energy by using a monochromatic (0.2 eV) and low-energy (0-10 eV) electron beam and a mass spectrometer. Negative ions at low energies are formed via a dissociative attachment process. Appearance potentials of certain negative ions can be correlated with the electron-releasing or -withdrawing power of the substituents and/or with bond strengths. For example, the appearance potentials of C6H5CO" and C2...
Mass spectrometric study of negative ions from acetyl derivatives
Hacaloğlu, Jale; Suzer, S. (1989-01-01)
A mass spectrometic technique capable of producing a low-energy and nearly monochromatic (fwhm ~ 0.2 eV) electron beam is developed and used to study the negative ions from five different acetyl derivatives CH3COX (X = Cl, C6H5, NH2, CH3, and H) at very low energies (0-10 eV). Negative ions are mainly produced by dissociative attachment and show resonance-like structures. To measure the excess energy imparted to the ions during ionization, a time-of-flight technique is applied. An ion with composition C2H30...
THEORY OF POLARIZED FLUORESCENCE FROM MOLECULAR PAIRS - FORSTER TRANSFER AT LARGE ELECTRONIC COUPLING
KNOX, RS; GULEN, D (Wiley, 1993-01-01)
Polarization properties of the fluorescence from a pair of identical molecules coupled electronically are examined on the basis of a stochastic Liouville equation formalism developed in 1979 by Rahman, Knox and Kenkre. The time development of polarization is calculated for random ensembles of rigid molecule pairs under initial conditions that represent either selective excitation or broad-band coherent excitation. We hold that the applicability of the Forster mechanism is not limited to cases of weak coupli...
The positional effect of dodecagonal holes on C-56 structure
Türker, Burhan Lemi (Elsevier BV, 2004-05-14)
Some C-56 isomers obtained theoretically from C-60 structure by deleting two C-2 units and bonds adjacent to those have been subjected to AM1 (UHF) type semiempirical quantum chemical calculations. Positional effects of dodecagonal (cyclododecahexaene rings) holes on the stabilities are discussed in the case of neutral as well as monovalent cationic form of these species which are all stable but endothermic in nature.
The synthesis and characterization of new metal-free and metallo phthalocyanines substituted with four dithiatetraoxa macrocyclic moieties
Kantekin, Halit; Rakap, Murat; Misir, Mirac Nedim; Goek, Halil Zeki; Acar, Irfan (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
New metal-free phthalocyanine ( 7) fused symmetrically in peripheral positions with four dithiatetraoxa macrocycles, has been synthesized by cyclotetramerization of the isoindoline-diimine derivative of macrocyclic 6. Metallophthalocyanine ( 8) was synthesized by reaction of phthalonitrile derivative ( 5) with anhydrous nickel( II) chloride. The new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, H-1 and C-13-NMR, IR UV-Vis and mass spectroscopies.
