This study highlights how heuristic evaluation as a usability evaluation method can feed into Current building design practice to conform to universal design principles. It provides a definition of universal usability that is applicable to an architectural design context. It takes the seven universal design principles as a set of heuristics and applies an iterative sequence of heuristic evaluation in a shopping mall, aiming to achieve a cost-effective evaluation process. The evaluation was composed of three consecutive sessions. First, five evaluators from different professions were interviewed regarding the construction drawings in terms of universal design principles. Then, each evaluator was asked to perform the predefined task scenarios. In subsequent interviews, the evaluators were asked to reanalyze the construction drawings. The results showed that heuristic evaluation could successfully integrate universal usability into Current building design practice in two ways: (i) it promoted an iterative evaluation process combined with multi-sessions rather than relying on one evaluator and on one evaluation session to find the maximum number of usability problems, and (ii) it highlighted the necessity of an interdisciplinary ad hoc committee regarding the heuristic abilities of each profession. A multi-session and interdisciplinary heuristic evaluation method can save both the project budget and the required time, while ensuring a reduced error rate for the universal usage of the built environments.

Product design, semantics and emotional response
Demirbilek, Oya; Şener Pedgley, Bahar (Informa UK Limited, 2003-10-20)
This paper explores theoretical issues in ergonomics related to semantics and the emotional content of design. The aim is to find answers to the following questions: how to design products triggering 'happiness' in one's mind; which product attributes help in the communication of positive emotions; and finally, how to evoke such emotions through a product. In other words, this is an investigation of the 'meaning' that could be designed into a product in order to 'communicate' with the user at an emotional l...
Ergonomics And Universal Design In Interior Architecture Education
Olguntürk, Nilgün; Demirkan, Halime (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2009-12-15)
The focus of this article is on the application of Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) principles on design process. Designers begin acquiring HFE principles and data during their university education. Universal Design (UD) approaches HFE as incorporating the whole of the population rather than a certain percent. This study explores the effectiveness of a specially designed course on UD in an interior architecture undergraduate program. After completion of the course, students were asked to evaluate their le...
A computational architecture methodology for design in traditional tissue: the case of Kalkan
Karabağ, Kutay; Asatekin, Gül; Department of Architecture (2010)
This study targets to address the problem of 'new building in a traditional setting', utilizing computational design tools. The intention is to provide a methodology for analysis of architectural features of a traditional tissue and moreover propose computational design strategies utilizing algorithms for processing analytical data serving new building design. In the introduction part, this goal is exposed as well as a critic discussion based on a conservationist perspective for contemporary examples of com...
A reformulation of the ant colony optimization algorithm for large scale structural optimization
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Saka, M.p. (2011-01-01)
This study intends to improve performance of ant colony optimization (ACO) method for structural optimization problems particularly with many design variables or when design variables are chosen from large discrete sets. The algorithm developed with ACO method employs the so-called pheromone scaling approach to overcome entrapment of the search in a poor local optimum and thus to recover efficiency of the method for large-scale optimization problems. Besides, a new formulation is proposed for the local upda...
An inspection approach for conceptual models in notations derived from UML: A case study
Tanrioever, Oezeguer; Bilgen, Semih (2007-11-09)
This paper presents an overview of a proposed framework for improving the quality of conceptual models developed in notations derived from UML. To this aim, wellness properties of a UML model are described shortly. Through a case study, we show that an ad hoc inspection process in accordance with this framework can be defined and performed depending on the conceptual modeling notation and typical real models. This study showed us that the application of the defined inspection process, which adopts concepts ...
