A parametric study was carried out to investigate the effects of process parameters on the properties of opaque and/or colored polymer pigment. The core was synthesized using methyl methacrylate (MMA), methacrylic acid (MAA), and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and the shell from styrene. The surfactant/water (S/W) ratio was changed between 0.56 and 1.46, and the best ratio was determined to be 0.97. The increase in the amount of MAA and the pH of the medium increases the diameter of the swollen particles. The hollows could form only when the fraction of MAA in the monomer mixture was above 10%, and pH10. The opaque pigment with the largest diameter could be obtained at the S/W ratio of 0.97 and the MAA content of 20%, as 350 nm. It gave an opacity value of 93.8% when mixed with an acrylic resin at 50% by volume. The colored opaque polymer pigments were synthesized by adding copper phthalocyanine into the monomer mixture. The addition of 2% copper phthalocyanine yielded a green-blue color but 3% yielded blue color. The latter yielded a change in the lightness (L*) by a value of -31.49, and a total color difference (E*) of 30.05 compared with that of white opaque polymer pigment. POLYM. ENG. Polymer white light emitting diodes applications of benzotriazole and fluorene derivatives
Koçak, Güler; Çırpan, Ali; Department of Chemistry (2015)
In this thesis, white polymer light emitting diodes (WPLEDs) were constructed using benzotriazole and fluorene containing conjugated polymers. For this purpose, three different blue and four different orange emitting conjugated polymers with different end cappers were used. The method that was used throughout the thesis included mixing of two polymers (blue and orange emitting) having different weight ratios in a common solvent. These solutions were coated on ITO-glass substrates by spin-coating technique w...
Formation and characterization of infrared absorbing copper oxide surfaces
Arslan, Burcu; Erdogan, Metehan; Karakaya, İshak (2017-04-30)
Copper oxide formation has been investigated to combine the advantages of producing different size and shapes of coatings that possess good light absorbing properties. An aqueous blackening solution was investigated and optimum composition was found as 2.5 M NaOH and 0.225 M NaClO to form velvet copper oxide films. A two-step oxidation mechanism was proposed for the blackening process by carefully examining the experimental results. Formation of Cu2O was observed until the entire copper surface was covered ...
Preparation of 2D g-C3N4/TiO2 Heterojunction Nanocomposites for Photocatalytic Applications
Öztürk, Abdullah; Gündoğmuş, Pelin; Bouzıanı, Asmae; Erdoğan, Nursev (null; 2018-10-27)
In the present study, 2-dimensional (2D) graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocomposites have been synthesized to enhance visible light photocatalytic activity of TiO2. Synthesis of nanocomposites was done in 2 steps. First, g-C3N4 was realized by heating the melamine (2,4,6- Triamino-1,3,5- triazine) in nitrogen atmosphere. Then, g-C3N4 powder was dissolved in deionized water. Titanium precursor (Titanium tetra isopropoxide) and nitrogen source (HNO3) were mixed and added into g-C3N...
Development of high performance active materials for microbolometers
Eroğlu, Numan; Akın, Tayfun; Turan, Raşit; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2011)
This thesis reports the development of Vanadium Tungsten Oxide (VWO) film as an active detector material for uncooled infrared detectors by using the reactive DC magnetron co-sputtering method. VWO is a doped form of the Vanadium Oxide (VOx) which is known as a prominent material for uncooled infrared detectors with its high TCR, low resistivity, and low noise properties. VOx is a widely preferred material for commercialized uncooled infrared detectors along with its drawbacks. Fabrication is fairly difficu...
Characterization of non-Fickian moisture absorption in thermosetting polymers
Güloğlu, Görkem Eğemen; Altan, M. Cengiz (2015-05-22)
© 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.A recently developed moisture absorption model for thermosetting polymers that combines the non-Fickian, diffusion hindrance effects and three-dimensional anisotropy is introduced. The hindered diffusion model is shown to predict both short term Fickian and long term anomalous moisture absorption behavior often observed in thermosetting polymers and their composites. The salient characteristics of long term moisture uptake such as the equilibrium moisture content and the effect of ...
